A tribute by Gill Cooke

I was so sorry to hear the sad news that Tommy Eisgard had passed away on Friday 16th August 2019 He was a well known breeder and exhibitor of Irish Setters under his Red Tails affix in Sweden and he'll probably be remembered more by many of our older UK exhibitors and breeders . He judged Irish setters and gun dogs in the UK at open show level and had his first championship show appointment giving challenge certificates at Paignton in 2008.
I first met Tommy in 1983 when I was showing Sh Ch Caskeys Bo-Jo . Bo jo's sire was Sowerhill Sailor of Wendover (Digger!) who sired only two litters in the U.K before being exported to Sweden and to his new home with Tommy and Anne Eisgard.
“Digger “ was Tommy's pride & joy & quite rightly so, he was a very successful dog in the show ring and as a sire. In the 80's and the 90's Digger's winning progeny and his many group progeny class wins proved him to be a prepotent sire and one of Sweden's Top Stud dogs .Today he will be found at the back of most of the swedish Irish setter pedigree's !

Tommy always tried to breed to the breed standard and keep to the old “Wendover” type of setters ,which he most certainly achieved!
Over the years he & Anne bred some beautiful quality winning dogs with some classic heads, and their overall general appearance were balanced throughout . Tommy was passionate & sometime quite opinionated about the irish setters of today and he was very concerned that we were losing the characteristics in appearance of our setters especially by different interpretations of the breed standard
Tommy missed his long telephone conversation with Christine Heron (as we all do!) about his concerns regarding our breed of today as she was very much at that time of the same opinion.

On the occasions when we stayed in Sweden with Tommy & Anne they were very welcoming & excellent hosts . Tommy had a very dry sense of humour, he liked his little tipple & loved to cook , his speciality was when he cooked a whole Salmon, I'm not a great fish lover but I thought that his Salmon dish was absolutely delicious!

He will be Sadly missed and our sympathies go to his wife Anne, their Immediate family & his close friends at this very sad time,

Gill Cooke.
