North East of England Irish Setter Club 19 October 2019 - Judges Critique - Bitches - Silke Lohkamp-Sommer

First of all I want to say thank you to the Committee of the NEEISC to give me the great honor to award the bitches CC’s and to all the exhibitors and their lovely dogs. I found that the quality is very high in the UK, most of the dogs were very well looked after and were presented in good nic. Only a few times I found some knots under the armpits. I recognized that a few dogs are lacking in movement, I missed reach n drive, and our lovely breed is a gundog breed which should be able to move as the standard says. What I also like to say is, that the dogs are better (very much) handled than on the continent, also the overall presentation. In some classes I wished I had more red cards! Sometimes it was a hair splitting decision on another day, it could be different! Overall I was very pleased with my entries and thank you all very, very much to made this day so very special to me! A special thank you to my 2 stewards, they did a super job! Thank you!

Many thanks to the committee for the kind invitation to judge at their Championship Show. Also, a thanks to my two stewards. A big thank you to the exhibitors for bringing your dogs to my last judging appointment. After 35 years of judging, it is time for me to retire. Thanks once again.

It was an honour to be invited to judge at this very friendly show. I would like to thank my stewards who did an excellent job and the exhibitors for allowing me the opportunity to judge their lovely dogs,I thoroughly enjoyed my day. It was a pleasure to go over such beautifully presented dogs. This is a breed that needs lots of room to move in order to be shown to advantage. The committee provided a large ring and I asked every exhibitor to make sure that they made full use of all the ring when moving, as often, many do not, thereby limiting their dog's chances. Some dogs that I liked, disappointed on the move and paid the price. I was surprised how many moved very closely behind and how many lacked reach and drive. One of the things this breed is known for is its movement and is something we need to be careful not to lose. Without the ability to move correctly they would not be able to sustain a day's work in the field, the job of work they were bred for.

Dogs
I appreciated the hospitality shown to me before & during the show & the quality entry of dogs.  The flooring seems to have less grip than it once did with several struggling on the stack & a few losing their footing on the move.
