Critique - Judge - Ro Cox

Thank you to the committee for inviting me to judge at their well organised show especially with the weather; a big thank you to my steward, Christine who kept things running smoothly and efficiently; and a very big thank you to the exhibitors for such a lovely entry. I was thrilled to go over your dogs and my hands were as clean at the end as they were at the beginning. The ring wasn't the easiest for standing the dogs (for the judge) or moving them as the tarmac was sloping in different directions which made movement a little difficult to assess; however, I was very pleased with my final line up and in many classes the decisions could have gone any which way.

Irish Setters

Minor Puppy (4 entered:1 absent)

Three very different puppies that made me quite broody.
1st - King's Kirkavagh Zrnyatta: I loved the shape of this feminine young lady when she decided to stand for her owner, movement typical of a baby Irish but full of promise, good balance to front and rear angulation, good length of neck, neat feet, head needs time but the glint in the eye was mischievous.
2nd - Andrew's Zakhan's Scarlett Ribbon: another promising baby with pretty head, moved well.

3rd - Randle's Corranroo Crystal Falls Between Rionore

Puppy (5:0)

1st - Heron's Caskeys Maestro: 10 month old boy who was full of himself. Great shape and balance with substance. Nice head which still needs time to break, dark eyes, low set ears, lovely length of neck into well placed shoulders, good depth of chest for a baby, good angulation. Wasn't at one with his owner on the move all the time but when they got it together he showed a lovely reach in front and drive behind so I couldn't resist his placing. BPIB Sadly was unable to stay for end of show judging.

2nd - King's Kirkavagh Zrnyatta
3rd - Bailey's Danaway Dallas
Res - Harrison's Caskeys Midsummer Madness
VHC - Brown's Baystrider Candy Floss

Junior (5:1)

1st - Catling's Shandwick Love In A Mist For Teleri: a more rangy mature young bitch, presented well, pretty head, well placed shoulders, good rear angulation down into short hocks, well balanced on the move holding her top line.

2nd - Hogarth's Redclyst Flash
3rd - Bailey's Danaway Dallas
Res - Gilbert, Willis,Milligan Bott & Bott's Thendara Chasing Cars

Novice (3:0)

1st - Hogarth's Redclyst Flash: just 13 months so has plenty of time on his side and is maturing nicely, I liked his overall shape, good head and dark coat. He was another one who found the uneven surface difficult to show himself off to his best today but had good reach and drive.
2nd - Edwards's Gwendariff The Pink Panther: a rangier boy who still needs to time to show himself, sympathetically handled.

3rd - Bayliss's Lindenjo Mallard

Graduate (7:1)

1st - Hall's Currowhill Tickle Pink With Glennara JW: a lovely rangy bitch with the right balance of being feminine and having substance, pretty head, good length of neck, good angulation and she moved out well even if she did give her owner a hard time.
2nd - Humphrey's Millcroft Havana Moon Over Henaleas JW: another lovely bitch who pushed 1st hard, finer throughout but with balance and enthusiastic movement I was really torn on this decision in this class.

3rd - Bouttell's Ixia Ever Hopeful
Res - Mitchell's Amblin's Sweet William
VHC - Edwards's Gwendariff The Pink Panther

Post Graduate (5:0)

1st - Humphrey's Suteresett Miss Curious About Henaleas JW: this lady moved with style and drive, very pretty feminine head, low ear set and dark eyes and rich dark coat, good length of neck into good shoulders, well angulated hind quarters, I loved her balance on the move. Happy to award her a well deserved RBOB.
2nd - Nicholl's Delsanto Snow Storm: was unfortunate to come up against 1 in such good form, has matured into a lovely masculine boy with no coarseness, lovely balance and shape and steady mover.

3rd - Richardson's Kirkavagh Intermezzo
Res - Gilbert & Willis's Jonola Dancing Queen of Clanoventa
VHC - Brown's Haravancourt Heavenly

Open Dog (5:0)

1st Richardson's Kirkavagh Hernando Sh CM: I've judged this boy before and he didn't disappoint today, handsome dog, rich colour, masculine balanced head, low ear set, good layback of shoulder, well let down over ribs, good width of thigh, lovely rear angulation, moved out true with good reach and drive. Delighted to award him BOB from a tough line up.
2nd Bouttell & Burbridge's Ixia Josiah at Merrybone: another nice dog with a lot to like about him but the uneven tarmac made his movement harder to judge than normal.

3rd Rorke's Cataluna Pole Position
Res - Gilbert & Willis's Thendara Dizzie Rascal Raps Clanoventa
VHC - Gilks's Suteresett Mr Uppity

Open Bitch (5:2)

1st - King's Kirkavagh Ebadiyla JW: beautiful bitch with prettiest of heads and that traditional quizzical expression that you don't see enough of these days. Lovely profile standing, just carrying a little more weight than I would like which unfortunately showed on the move. On a 'lighter' day could have easily challenged hard for BOB
2nd - Elkins's Avacet Snowbird: another nice bitch who pushed 1st hard.
3rd - Allum's Macarica Street Dancer

Veteran (3:1)

1st - Rorke's Cataluna Captivatione to Zakhan: a lovely boy enjoying his day out, balanced on the move, a credit to his owner and was delighted to see him go RBVIS
2nd - Fox's Satlas Bleau Eyes: another oldie enjoying an outing and showing some of the youngsters how it should be done.
