My first appointment at this level and it was an honour to judge what is without doubt my favourite breed. My thanks to the Committee for the invitation and to the exhibitors for their support. I thoroughly enjoyed my day despite the weather conditions which impacted the use of such a large ring but well done and thank you to all exhibitors for having that “keep clam and carry on” attitude and dealing with it. My two main watch outs on the day were the lack of muscular condition on some and a number of unpleasing heads. The first point is one that I believe is a must, an essential in this breed. They want and need to free run and personally is one of the greatest pleasures I get from owning Irish. With regards to heads which in my opinion is one of the most beautiful assets of our breed, I was disappointed with the number of broad skulls, heavy flews and then the other extreme lack of skull and brow.
Minor Puppy: 3 (1 abs)
1st: Anthony & Stuart, Cordarragh Upper Class
Masculine head with an appealing expression. Good length of neck into good shoulder placement. Deep chest & in good body for a baby. Feet need to tighten and will come with some road work.
2nd: Rorke, Zakhan On The Grid
Showed well for a baby. In good condition. A little heavy over the shoulder at this stage which spoils the outline. Good spring of rib & width to thigh. Needs time to tighten in front.
Puppy: 7 (0 abs)
1st: Stewart & Ricthie-Smith, Gwendariff Whippersnapper
A very promising, upstanding young man. Eye catching in outline and did not disappoint to go over. Soft expression. Correct depth of chest, straight front into good spring of rib with good bone throughout. One to watch for the future as he matures. Moved with purpose, holding head and topline. Presented in excellent condition, handled well. BP
2nd: Bridgwater, Bardonhill Bertie Boy By Bridgella
A smaller framed boy throughout than 1 and with time will mature and body up. Lovely refined head, dark eye with a lovely expression with good brow. Lovely coat colour. Good, straight front, tight feet. Deep chest. Would like more bend of stifle. Short hocks. Moved well.
3rd: Macdonald, Redclyst Kearney
Junior : 4 (0 abs)
1st: Cuddy, Aoibheanne Quite The Rebel By Balbriggan
Quality male, lots to like. Balanced dog overall, not over done in anyway. Most appealing head and eye. Lovely to go over. Straight front, good depth of chest and spring of rib. Correct bend of stifle. In good body and condition. Moved with reach and drive.
2nd: Gisby & Gisby, Suteresett Mr Cool
Not as balanced overall at this age than 1, his rear needs to catch his front up. Pleasing head. Dark eye. Good length and strength of neck. Well paced shoulders & straight front. Needs to settle on the move.
3rd: Anthony & Stuart, Cordarragh Upper Class
Yearling: 8 (1 abs)
1st: Vatcher & Jones, Gwendariff Viva Las Vegas
Most attractive outline on the stand, clean lines throughout and didn’t disappoint to go over. Presented in top condition. Just right overall at this age. Beautiful head into pleasing front assembly. Correct depth of chest, straight front. Good spring of rib. Wide powerful quarters which he used well on the move. A pleasure to watch him.
2nd: Condron, Covarney Emmett
Clearly enjoying himself. A little erratic on the move and made hard work for his handler. Saying that, liked his outline and balance. Not as refined in head as 1. Correct straight front, well placed shoulders. Good spring of rib. Well angulated quarters.
3rd: Gisby & Gisby, Suteresett Mr Cool
Graduate: 6 (0 abs)
1st: Needs, Thendara Joe Le Taxi
First class presentation and handled to get the absolute best out of him. Pleasing in outline, presents a nice picture. I would refer a more refined head but his other qualities won him his place. Well put together throughout, with good lay of shoulder, straight front and correct bend of stifle. Moved with style holding his top line.
2nd: Marmol, Polmennor Fun In The Sun
Liked him for his overall racy type. Appealing head with the softest of expressions. Low set ears, good stop. Good spring of ribs and well muscled rear quarters. Moved with drive.
3rd: Torpy, Follidown Meadow Pipit
Post Graduate: 10 (0 abs)
1st: Vatcher & Jones, Wynjill Farmers Boy
Just loved this dog for type, full of quality. One I will watch with great interest. From head to tail he pleased me. Lovely clean, balanced lines throughout. Presented in great condition. Handler used the ring to his advantage getting the best out of this boy on the move.
2nd: Tully, Highclare Knights Tail
This is a very nice dog that appealed to me for his overall balance and type, not over done in anyway. Lovely to go over. Spot on front assembly, with straight front, good bone throughout. Correct spring of rib. Good width to quarters. Covered the ground really well.
3rd: Cuddy, Suteresett Royal Ripple With Balbriggan
Limit: 11 (0 abs)
1st: Hogarth, Avacet Snowdrift
A real eye catching boy. To me the best head of the day. Correct proportions, expression, brow and eye colour. Could have looked into his eyes for hours. In very good coat and presented in top class condition. Strong clean neck into good front. Great depth of chest and spring of rib. Tight feet. Good bone. Powerful, well angulated rear quarters. A pleasure to judge him and award him the Res CC.
2nd: Hunter, Sametsuz Scriptwriter
Of lovely type and one I have admired for some time. Lots to like about this boy. Preferred head piece on 1 but he is so well put together throughout. Once in flow on the move, he went very well.
3rd: Crosswell, Gwendariff Mr Noticeme JW
Open: 5 (1 abs)
1st: McLarnon, Sh Ch Ir Sh Ch Northamber Just Cause For Glenavna
Ticked all the boxes for me on the day and well deserving of top honours. This handler knows how to get the best out of her dog. Has that look at me ring presence. Presented in top condition in great coat. Superb confirmation throughout. Lovely brow which gives him that desired expression. Correct length of neck. Good lay of shoulder. Great depth of chest, good bone, correct rear angulations. In good muscular condition. Moved soundly, with style and with ease. Delighted to award him the CC & BOB and pleased to see him shortlisted in a quality Group.
2nd: Holley & Cheney, Sh Ch Gwendariff Pop The Question JW
Loved him for his raciness and type. Flows from tip to tail, so well balanced. The most beautiful of expressions, with lots of work in his head. Good bone, muscular neck, shoulders well laid back. Strong and muscular throughout. Gently sloping topline, held well on the move. This boy excels on the move with such purpose but makes it all look so effortless.
3rd: Gisby & Gisby, Sh Ch Sutersett Milky Way With Scarletti JW
Minor Puppy: 3 (0 abs)
Unfortunately at the start of these classes we had to contend with thunderstorms which understandably frightend some. Well done to those handlers for their patiecne and the reassurance given to thier dogs.
1st: Bott, Allen & Morgan, Bardonhill Please Dont Tease Quensha
Promising puppy. The most feminine of heads, with dark eye giving an expression that made me smile. Good bone for a baby. Pleasing depth throughout. Tight feet. In good coat and condition. Would just like a bit more angulation in the rear quarters. Moved with such perosnality and style. Superbly handled.
2nd: Blomme & Lefebvre, Balintyne Follow That Girl
Liked her a lot. Pretty head, good length of neck. Good lay of shoulder. Straight front. In good body. Moved well and with time will strengthen in rear.
3rd: Hyslop, Gwendariff I’m On Show
Puppy: 5 (0 abs)
1st: Wilkins, Bardonhill Hetty Bayliss Among Margretswood
Sympathetically handled to get the best out of her in the conditions. So together for her age. Another consistent head type from this kennel which is so pleasing to the eye. In fabulous body. Lovely length of neck. Tight front. Neat feet. Nice width to quarters, used well on the move. BPB
2nd: Bott, Allen & Morgan, Bardonhill Please Dont Tease Quensha
3rd: Clifford, Bardonhill Rita Skeeter at Coppersheen
Junior : 5 (2 abs)
1st: Sketchley, Oakchase Gulietta
Of nice type. Really came into her own on the move. Pretty head with a kind dark eye, well set ears. Straight front. Good feet. Correct depth of chest and spring of rib.
2nd: Frampton, Strathmead Penny Whistle
Loved her personality, good to see her enjoy herself. In good condition, body and pleasing bone. Well placed shoulders. Correct tight feet. Nicely angulated rear quarters. Moved very well.
3rd: Drinkwater, Brabrook Boomshakalaka
Yearling: 6 (0 abs)
1st: Holley, Gwendariff Soda Pop to Wynjill
Beautiful racy outline on the stand and when she moves she has a class about her, it is all so effortless. The most appealing of heads, with correct proportions, dark eye and desired raised brow. She flows cleanly from head to tail, with elegance and substance. Excellent front and rear assembly. A most promising future I am sure for this girl.
2nd: Brend, Thendara Dutchess At Devacott
A feminine racy bitch who really appealed to me in the line up for her overall balanced outline. Pretty head. Good forechest and spring of rib. Gently sloping topline which she held well on the move.
3rd: Carter Gwendariff Specially Maid
Graduate: 9 (2 abs)
1st: Watt, Shenanagin Softly Softly
Every time I looked around the ring my eyes were drawn to this girl. She never stood wrong. So well put together, well balanced and not overdone in anyway. A good honest bitch. Presented in tip top condition. In lovely coat. Moved with purpose and with character which is lovely to see.
2nd: King, Kirkavagh Windmill Girl JW
Liked her shape in profile but just carrying a bit too much weight on the day. Pleasing head, correct ear set. Shoulders well placed. Straight, tight front, with good depth of chest. Good width to thigh and well bent stile.
3rd: Barker Bell, Balintyne Foreign Affair
Post Graduate: 13 (1 abs)
1st: Douthwaite & Wharfe, Gracewood Shannon JW
I could have watched this bitch move and move and move. She just came into her own and showed off her qualities. A larger framed bitch but still has femininity about her which I loved. Very pretty head. Well constructed throughout, very nice to go over.
2nd: Roberts, Polmennor Willow Pattern
I liked this bitch more when I went over her. Very well constructed. Appealing head with the softest of expressions. Well laid shoulders, sloping topline from the withers, strong loin and short hocks. Moved very soundly.
3rd: Price, Severnvale High Class Babe JW
Limit: 12 (4 abs)
1st: Stewart & Ricthie-Smith, Gwendariff Fizzy Pop JW
Top quality, full of class and racy my notes say and she absolutely was. What a winning combination. For type she is right up my street. I have admired this bitch from a very young age and she exceeds all my expectations. Handled and presented to perfection. One of the best heads on the day for me, dark eye, raised brow, melting expression. Good length of neck. Excellent front assembly. Good bone. Great hindquarters, with good width and strength. On the move she didn’t put a foot wrong and holds herself with style which demands attention, which she certainly did. A pleasure to award her the CC.
2nd: Waterton, Lynwood Kissed By An Angel at Sandstream JW Sh CM
Another of great quality who is now at her prime. Overall very well balanced. Loved her head. Well laid shoulders, straight front and deep chest. Well sprung ribs. Good width to thigh with short hocks. Just couldn’t settle on the move as she was far more interested in what was in her handlers’ pockets.
3rd: Meadows, Gwendariff Miss Whiplash JW
Open: 6 (0 abs)
1st: Gardner, Carnbargus Contemplation JW
A smaller framed bitch with class and style. A beautiful, clean outline. The most feminine of heads, with an expression I would like to bottle and keep. Good length of neck into well placed shoulders. Straight front, good bone. Plenty of depth to chest and spring of rib. Well angulated hindquarters, with a power that she used on the move. In beautiful coat. Very happy to award her the Res CC.
2nd: Powis, Sh Ch Amberwave Freckles JW
A well deserved champion who is full of quality and it was a pleasure to judge her. A sound, honest bitch that is not overdone in anyway from her head to tail. To me she is plainer in head than 1 but I still very much admired her many positive attributes. Well made throughout. Moved with front extension and drive from behind. In great condition.
