Critique - Judge: Mrs Diane Stewart-Ritchie (Gwendariff)
My thanks to the ladies of the West of England Ladies Kennel Society for inviting me to judge at this well run show. The hospitality afforded to me was exceptional and I really enjoyed this appointment.
Today we had four seasons in one day which I know may have been difficult for some exhibitors. I, too was not enamoured with this but in the main the rain stayed away and we had such a big ring outside it would have been a pity to go indoors especially as many of the classes were in the high teens in numbers.
I found the male dogs much improved from the last time I judged with fronts certainly being a lot better. However, it was the girls who delighted me so much.
Our breed is teamed with many quality girls who have very good constructional qualities. Most female classes presented me with hard decisions to make and I came away from this appointment truly inspired that we have such depth within our females – this can only augur well if breeders make the right choices when reproducing in this difficult climate. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one who exhibited. Your dogs were presented beautifully and in my full entry I never had to use a hand wipe once.
Thank You so very much for giving me the pleasure of judging some very lovely Irish Setters today.

1ST KERRIMERE JUST RUMOURS (MR & MRS C H CARTER)
Good head and lovely kind eye of correct shape and colour. Good ear set and length. Pleasing in head. Really good front assembly and strong through ribs and loin. Carrying good amount of coat and moved well.

Two nice boys headed this class. Both of differing but both of lovely types. Both sound and true, with one just having the edge on overall balance today.
1ST FORFARIAN I'M SEXY AN I KNOW IT (MRS S & MISSES N & J STURROCK)
Good in all departments with lovely flowing topline. Compact and very together at this early stage. Most lovely head of true balance with correct planes and good amount of work throughout. Dark kind expressive eye, with good pigmentation. Excellent finish to foreface. Straight front with good angulation in shoulder and upper arm, matched equally with his well-angulated hind quarters. Not exaggerated in any way, I liked him a lot.
2ND ORLANSET THE ROCKER (MR & MRS D & KM HEMMINGS)
A quality puppy with dark rich coat, a little taller than 1 and just a little rangier. Good head and eye, strong body, with good angulation throughout. Good bone and neat tidy feet, good rib cage carried well back. A lovely tidy mover both in profile and coming and going. Pushed 1 hard, very promising baby.
3RD CAEMGEN'S ELEMENT OF TRUTH AT FEORLIG (IMP SWE) (MISS K & MISS S V MILLER & WOLLBRAATEN)

1ST & BPIB WYNJILL WELL I AM (MRS J HOLLEY)
Took my eye on the first look around the class. Stylish, elegant and racy. He was a picture. Of excellent type, with the most lovely head, dark eye, good length of fore face and good finish, clean and balanced and possessing correct angles both front and rear. Clean through neck and shoulder continuing through his backline and croup and tail set. Already showing good amount of coat for his age. Stands on good firm tight feet with correct amount of bone. Deep in ribs of correct shape and good spring. Strong in loin area. Well-muscled through first and second thighs. Moved with great extension, covered the ground well. One to watch.
2ND SUTERESETT REBEL ROUSER IN BALBRIGGAN (MR J & MRS S CUDDY)
A little plainer in head than 1, but still very pleasing. Dark eye of good shape, good amount of stop. Earset correct, deep chest, well ribbed up, strong loin, great top line and super quarters. Very much to like about this boy but today just not as true as 1. He’s young and I’m sure he will strengthen. A quality puppy.
3RD COPPERS TWIST AND SHOUT IMP SWE TAF (MR G HUGHES)
Junior - Dog
Entries: 5 Absentees: 0
These first two boys are of very differing types and loads to like about each one. They are both extremely good movers which pleased me immensely, I really was nit picking. Liked them both a lot.
1ST CLONAGEERA KINROSS LOVE BAROLO (MRS P RUTHERFORD)
Dark eye, good amount of stop, plenty of chiselling. Ear set and length good. Good length of neck leading into clean shoulder and an overall excellent topline. Liked his angulation both fore and aft. Strong and deep ribs. Excellent quarters, good bend of stifle, short strong hocks, moved out with great style and animation.
2ND ANLORY KELTIC BLUE SKY ( NAYLOR, MORRISON & GREENAN)
Very dark and of good balance. Not exaggerated in anyway. A very moderate young man in fact. Nice head with all the essentials, super top line. Good bone, neat feet and another from this kennel with super profile movement. Today his coat was a little lack lustre but I’m sure this is only temporary. He has much to commend and I’m sure will trouble his rivals immensely. Smart young man.
3RD SPECIAL BREW FOR COVARNEY (MR G T & MRS K E B CONDRON)

1ST AOIBHEANNES QUITE THE REBEL BY BALBRIGGAN JW (MR J & MRS S CUDDY)
Dark coated, of nice type, good bone and nice feet. Straight front and excels in quarters and topline. Moved well to win this class.
2ND BRABROOK DANNY BOY ( MRS B & P DRINKWATER & WATTS)
Strong upstanding male, another with very dark coat, excels in front assembly and also has good quarters. Can really reach out in front on move and pushes off short strong hocks although I’m not so keen on his tail action.

Some surprises here, both positively and also negatively. Some dogs were rather disappointing whilst others once young and raw had progressed well. I suppose that’s typical of the Graduate classes, in between stages; it’s a waiting game. Our breed is slow to mature and this class typifies the variation in maturity levels.
1ST RAPPATTY EXCALIBUR JW (MRS P LUTO)
Have done this boy well when he was younger although at that time I could not say he was a favourite. He is coming on an absolute treat. When I approached him I could see the resemblance of his father. He has the most wonderful front assembly, a full prosternum and clean, unexaggerated topline. His dark coat is truly blooming with correct amount of feathering for his age. He is deep chested with strong well shape rib cage, carried well back to short strong loin. He has a good amount of first and second thigh. For absolute perfection I would like a little deeper in bend of stifle but no dog is perfect and his other qualities are in abundance. He was presented to me in excellent muscle, beautifully conditioned and is very sound and true. I would dearly love to have seen him in full motion. He was a contender for the RCC – dare I suggest a pacier handler, he wants to go, he’s got it, I’d love to see it!
2ND KIRKAVAGH XAKALA (MRS S STOCKER)
Breeder handled on the day and although I’d heard many compliments about this boy, I had never really seen him until today. I can see why he is admired. He is of a very different type than 1, but equally possess many great qualities. Another with excellent front assembly and super quarters. He moved positively and true carrying his topline correctly at all times. As always from this kennel there is a stamp. It is a stamp of quality and type. He pleased me immensely.
3RD CAISPERN LORENZO WITH SHUSHANA JW (MR & MRS H A M COHEN)
Post Graduate - Dog

The first three placings in this class have all been first prize card winners under me previously, so it was a hotly contested class.
These boys were at different levels of maturity and finish but I admired my winners greatly.
1ST & DCC & BOB THENDARA POT NOODLE (MRS D & MR J N MILLIGAN-BOTT & BOTT)
First to be judged in this class and he set the bench mark – and yes it was high. He oozes quality and impressed from the moment I laid hands on him. He is everything a setter should be and I feel I must quote;
Full of quality, totally balanced, so very racy and also handsome, yet refined. He has true balance in all departments and is a picture both standing and moving. He’s got that ‘look at me’ attitude – and I wouldn’t dare not to. Very pleasing head with correct skull shape, good amount of stop and plenty of work throughout and also clean in lip. Good arch to neck, of super length leading into correct firm topline. Well angulated front and rear and deep through rib and loin. He has no exaggeration and as you go over him each part fits snuggly and cleanly into the next. He is a little mischievous but that only adds to his character and shows the true essence of the Irish man within. I fell for him hook, line and sinker and was delighted to afford him the CC today and then Best of Breed. I was extremely proud to watch him represent us all so well and become short-listed into the last 8 in a very hotly contested group.
2ND THENDARA JOE LE TAXI FOR STOURFORD JW (MR W & MRS A NEEDS)
Plainer in head than 1, although still very pleasant. Dark eye of good shape and pigmentation. Raised brow and enough stop. Really liked his whole front assembly and his strength throughout. Lost out to 1 in hind quarter – its early days, he’s still young; I’ve no doubt there’s more to come. He has good bone and neat feet and is another from this kennel that is one to watch although I’m sure he will be a much slower maturing dog all through. He will take time but I’m sure he will be worth the wait. Presented and handled as always from this exhibitor in mint condition.

A strong class with some nice boys losing out on prize cards. This was a super class… Thank you so much for bringing your boys. There were many I admired. The three boys heading this class were all sired by the top sire and his stamp is through them. They were of a very nice type and this combined with their absolute soundness in movement gained them the highest placings in this class.
1ST & RDCC COPPER'S CHAMPAGNE ON ICE AT AOIBHEANNE (IMP SWE) JW (MISS E S CIECHONSKA)
This boy has won well under me before and today he was on top form. Point for point he is a super dog. He has the most gorgeous head and the most kind expressive eyes. His brows never stopped twitching the whole time I was judging him – delightful. Super finish to foreface, correct skull, low set ears, excellent chiselling.
All in all; melting. Balanced angulations both front and rear. Very deep chested, well ribbed back to strong loin. Super width to first and second thigh. Although not in abundance his coat is dark, rich and glossy. He’s not one who could carry too much coat. He moved out well for his substitute handler and continued to perform throughout the challenge. I was pleased to award him the RCC.
2ND HARVANCOURT HARLEM AT JACINGAIL (MR K & MISS J PULLEN & ATKIN)
I don’t think I’ve ever judged this dog before. He is a dog who appeals much more on hands on than from the ringside, in my opinion. He surprised me – and surprised me in a very positive way. A most lovely dog in all departments. Excel’s in quarters and top line but has all the basics in abundance. He is so very true coming and going and pleased me in profile also. I liked him a lot. Thank you for bringing him.

Two very different types but both quality boys.
1ST SH CH MEADWAY MORRISEY (MRS J & MR B A EDDEN & CROCKER)
This dog although not the biggest has true balance. He is unexaggerated and excels in movement. Sound as a pound his foot falls are super. Pleasing head, clean in lip, good angulation fore and aft. A strong well-muscled boy, put down in excellent condition.
2ND THENDARA FROZEN ASSET (MRS D, MR J N & MR W & MRS A MILLIGAN-BOTT, BOTT & LAUWERS)
Pleasant head with dark eye. Good length and finish of foreface. Correct shape skull, good ear set and carriage. Balanced boy all through. Very dark coated with copious amount of feathering. Excellent hind quarters, good topline. Nice type.

1ST LOTUSHILL MASTERCLASS AT GRISDALE ( MRS I H & MISS L M ROWAN & SMITH)
Presented in full coat. Moved well to win this class, although a bit of a handful. Good top line and tail set. Good forehand although not so keen on shoulder placement. Strong well-muscled hind quarters. Good bone, neat feet.
2ND BRABROOK DANNY BOY ( MRS B & P DRINKWATER & WATTS)
Critique as per Yearling.

Sorry about the hailstones ladies but just couldn’t do anything about it! These seasoned ladies held firm but still managed to show their paws off.
1ST STRATHMEAD SNOWBUNTING JW (MRS C WARNER)
A compact girl, put together beautifully, so well made and still so true in movement. Most lovely head with correct ratios through the planes of her head. Lovely clean finish to foreface with good amount of chiselling. Dark eyes, good pigment and raised brows. Good angulation all round. Good spring of rib, short loin, moved positively.
2ND HARTSBOURNE HYACINTH (MRS W K MORLEY)
Quality girl whom I have admired. She has many essentials in conformation and another good mover today in spite of the appalling conditions. Good bone, neat tidy feet. Balanced head piece with no exaggeration, loved her length of foreface. A strong bitch, with deep rib cage, well sprung and of good length, moved well.
3RD SEVERNVALE SHEER HEAVEN (MRS W M PRICE)
Minor Puppy - Bitch
Entries: 15 Absentees: 0
A super class and both this and the puppy class where a real headache. Many lovely puppies went cardless but the class was deep in quality throughout and many puppies pleased me immensely. Just all at differing stages of development today.
1ST NORTHAMBER RUNS RIOT AT LOTUSHILL (MRS C BORTHWICK)
Loved her balance and lack of exaggeration. Super headpiece, dark expressive eyes, good pigment and raised brows. Correct length of muzzle and clean in lip. Balanced angulation fore and aft, clean in outline with excellent top line and tail set. Good width to quarters already. Beautiful feet, a real baby but absolutely sound as a pound on the move. Loved her.
2ND BARDONHILL GUILTY PLEASURE (MRS M BOTT)
My notes say really pretty baby. Her headpiece is so typical of this kennel with the most beautiful expression and eye. Ultra feminine, balanced and with plenty of work throughout. Good neck and shoulder. Her front is very true. Good ribs and length of loin. Good bone and neat feet. Lost out to 1 in hind quarter development at this time. Her many other attributes gained her this high placing.
3RD FORFARIAN HEY SEXY LADY (MRS S & MISSES N & J STURROCK)
Puppy - Bitch

1ST & BPB ROMARNE ONE NIGHT ONLY (MRS L MUIR)
Balanced in head with good amount of work, raised brows, dark eyes and correct pigment. Excellent neck and shoulder and good posternum. Good balance to body overall. Such an honest girl – my notes say, ‘fab shoulders’. Positive, steady and true on the move, coming, going and in profile.
2ND WYNJILL WELL KNOWN (MRS J HOLLEY)
Loved her for type. So stylish and again another great mover. Very elegant and clean throughout, lovely front
assembly, deep chest, well ribbed back. Good width to hind quarters. Well-muscled and in great condition.
Very appealing headpiece with correct eye colour and excels in length of muzzle.
3RD SUTERESETT ONCE UPON A DREAM (MRS T & MISS G GISBY)
Junior - Bitch

1ST MILLCROFT MOON AND STARS AT AOIBHEANNE (MISS E S CIECHONSKA)
Very dark coated, standing over a good amount of ground and so very well made. She is hard to fault in conformation and possesses a really lovely headpiece which excels in expression and chiselling. She is deep and her ribs go way back. Good hind quarters and once again positive and true on the move. I was quite taken with her. Thank you for bringing her.
2ND DANAWAY LOVE SONG FOR CORRRIEBRAN (MR T R & MRS G J GRIFFIN)
Half-sister to the winner of this class as they both have the same sire, todays RDCC winner. Similar remarks apply in relation to this ladies construction although she is of a different style. I admired her beautiful headpiece which is quite familiar to me. She is elegant and racy and another very honest mover. Unfortunately she was a little lacking in coat today which certainly made it easier for her half-sister to win. I’m sure she can trouble the best with a bit more finish.
3RD BARDONHILL PLEASE DONT TEASE QUENSHA JW (MR R, MR A & MRS A BOTT, ALLEN & MORGAN)

1ST BARDONHILL HETTY BAYLISS AMONG MARGRETWOODS JW (MRS J WILKINS)
Another top quality exhibit from this breeder. I have admired her many times from the ringside and watched her mature through the classes. She is of a lovely type, very pretty and a sound honest mover. She has a lovely front and her quarters are equally balanced. Unexaggerated, balanced and with all the constructional essentials. She surely is one for the future.
2ND LOCHLORIEN SCULLY FOXES ANDLEY (MR G & MRS C STEVENSON)
Quality girl of good size, with super bone and feet. Lovely head piece, kind dark eye and good amount of brow. Her body is well balanced and she possesses a great front. She is dark coated and is carrying just the right amount of feathering for her age. A lovely type and am delighted to say another of today’s great movers.
3RD KIRWILLDALE TIT FOR TAT AT ROWDENHILL (MRS C S COOPER)
Graduate - Bitch
Entries: 12 Absentees: 2
Two litter sisters headed this class. Yet again they are daughters of my RDCC winner. What a lovely pair they were, both excellent movers and both carrying a sumptuous amount of coat. I liked them both very much.
1ST NEATHAMILL NERISSA (MRS B C EVANS)
A shade darker in coat than her sister and preferred this girls head through the foreface. She has a little more chiselling and this appealed. Really well made with excellent quarters and excels in top line and tailset. Great mover, honest and positive. I really liked her.
2ND NEATHAMILL ISABELLA AT CLONAGEERA (MRS J R & MR J LIPPETT)
Similar construction to 1 and yet again a very nice head piece. Good bone, neat tidy feet. Good angles fore and aft, well sprung rib cage and so very honest on the move. It really is nip and tuck between these two and on another day they could easily change places.
3RD OAKCHASE GULIETTA (A I ) (MRS L SKETCHLEY)
Post Graduate - Bitch
Entries: 13 Absentees: 2
Lovely class, quality bitches, Thank You for allowing for my opinion on your girls.
1ST ROMARNE SAVANNAH JW (MRS L MUIR)
Balanced, unexaggerated and so very honest. She’s not a big girl but she’s extremely well made and so very true on the move. I liked her head which has all one would require. Excels in finish to foreface and work throughout. Good neck and shoulder and good amount of prosternum. Deep well sprung ribs, short strong loin. Good width to hind quarters and well-muscled through first and second thighs. Good bone and beautiful feet. Her movement was effortless. It had to be to win such a strong class.
2ND SUTERESETT BLACK MAGIC (MRS T & MISS G GISBY)
Pretty head with dark eye, busy raised brows and super skull shape. Good foreface. Ear set length and carriage correct. Balanced angulation fore and aft. Gently sloping topline. Moved well. Just preferred the croup of 1. This girl has much to commend and will surely keep troubling the best.
3RD GRAYRIGGE ROSALIND JW (MRS P M POLLARD)
Limit - Bitch

A head ache to judge this class. Really liked so many of these girls and although you’ve heard it all before, in this case it really is true when I say that they could change places any day. Many of these girls where very well made – but decisions must be made and although construction and movement where a big part of my decisions with such closeness between them, in the end I just went with my heart. Thank you everyone for affording me the honour to judge such a lovely class of girls.
1ST & RBCC ASTLEY VIEW SUMMER FOX (MRS S A MUTCH)
Totally balanced, unexaggerated and such quality. Her handler doesn’t move her too fast but shes got it! Her foot falls are nigh on perfect. She has reach and drive in abundance and although still young and for absolute perfection I would prefer more coat. Today she just tugged at my heart strings and after putting hands on her I just couldn’t get her out of my mind. Shes not a big girl but shes beautifully formed. Her head is pleasant with a dark eye and good expression. Clean in outline with super angulation all round and every bit flows into the next so easily. Shes from the top drawer – she had to be to win this hotly contested class. It gave me great pleasure to award this young lady the RBCC.
2ND ANLORY CARINENA JW ( NAYLOR & MORRISON)
Another from this kennel who is destined I’m sure for top honours. I have always done this kennel well and this is another that this breeder has produced that I like so very much. A longer bitch than 1 and appears to be out of coat. With her being taller on the leg it makes her appear a little less balanced than 1. Shes a great mover and has a good headpiece. Her top line and tail set flow. Shes strong in quarters and very well-muscled. Just not the front assembly of 1. I did like her very much.

A smaller class but these girls were also of high quality. It was a long cold day. My thanks to you all for persevering with me. Your girls were lovely.
1ST & BCC SH CH NORTHAMBER CAUSIN A RIOT JW (MR & MRS B F & E HINSLEA)
I don’t know who was the most surprised here – me or this girls owner/handler. I have competed with this girl many times and now having judged her, I can see why she is major competition. Her body properties are super. Her coat is rich, lustrous and in absolute abundance. She moved with style and panache and again had that ‘look at me’ attitude. She was the winner and she knew it. She never put a foot wrong and was presented to me today in tip top coat condition and performance. Her skull planes are correct. She has a dark kind eye and raised brow. Good top line and tail set. Good front assembly. Deep chested and well ribbed back. Strong muscular loin. Wide powerful hind quarters with good amount of first and second thigh. Correct bend of stifle. Short strong rear pasterns which she used to advantage on the move. Correct shaped bone and very lovely feet. She was the complete picture – feminine, fully coated, well-constructed and to top the lot off, a show girl. I was delighted to award her the BCC; she truly deserved it. Thank you for bringing her.
2ND SH CH AMBERWAVE FRECKLES J W (MR & MRS J P POWIS)
This kennel continually produces sound, honest and true both in movement and construction. Whichever stud dog these girls are mated to their lines still hold fast – I’ve a great admiration for the consistency of maintaining their type and movement. This lady is another who fits this bill. She is well made with good angulation both front and rear. She is racy, elegant and so very honest. Her movement is steady and true. She shows great reach and drive. Her whole outline is clean and unexaggerated. She has a quality head with a kind eye of the correct colour and shape. Good length and finish of foreface. Good amount of stop and raised brow. Today she just lost out to 1 on amount of furnishings. Her movement was delightful.
