Critique - Judge: Mrs P Smith(Reddins)

I would like to thank the exhibitors for coming under me, some a very long way indeed and I very much appreciated all your efforts in presenting your exhibits in such good condition. Because there was no Yearling or Graduate class scheduled the Post Graduate and Limit classes in both sexes were well filled with plenty of quality in depth making my task difficult with inevitably some good exhibits being unplaced. One particular observation I would like to make is the lack of really good feet. The toes should be tight well arched and relatively small and the dog should stand up on his feet and not down on his pasterns.

IRISH SETTER DOGS

Minor Puppy Dog : (1)

1st Milligan-Bott and Bott's "Paris Match Thendara". A young dog of just 6 months who stood and moved very well for such a young fellow. He has a good head and extrovert personality. A little raw at the moment which is only to be expected.

Puppy Dog : (7)

1st Stewart and Ritchie-Smith "Gwendariff The Big Atraxion". Balanced soundly made young Irish with arched neck leading to well laid shoulders and good tail set. Good shape to the head but would prefer a darker eye. Beautifully presented and handled, moving very well around the ring. Best puppy in breed.

2nd Hemmings "Orlanset The Rocker". Another attractive puppy with a good head and eye and better feet than the winner but not as good in shoulder placement. Nice rich colour to his coat.

3rd Kniveton's "Bardonhill Top Gun"

Junior Dog (10) 2 abs.

1st Naylor, Morrison and Greenan's "Anlory Keltic Blue". Catches the eye and is always handled to advantage. He is a strong well made dog with a good coat standing up on his feet and he moved well to take the class.

2nd Cuddy's "Suteresett Rebel Rouser in Balbriggan". I liked this dog in outline with nicely flowing lines and who moved stylishly around the ring. He was not as good in feet as the winner and is a little plain in head which needs to break.

3rd Box's "Shenanagin Singled Out for Fernstart".

Post Graduate Dog (17) 2 abs

1st Cohen's "Caispern Lorenzo with Shushana". Good class. Well balanced young man who scores in head, neck and shoulder placement who moved with ease around the ring. Presented In lovely coat and condition, correct tail carriage and a pleasure to see good feet.

2nd Gisby's "Suteresett Mr. Cool". Another very nice dog and although they are both of a similar age this one needs more time to come together as he is a bigger dog. He owns a handsome head with raised brows and good expression. A rich dark coat completes the picture and again a pleasure to see correct feet. He moved with style around the ring.

3rd Stewart and Ritchie-Smith's "Gwendariff Whippersnapper".

Limit Dog (12) 1 abs

1st Ciechonska's "Copper's Champagne on Ice at Aoibheanne" Another class of some quality dogs. This young dog moved around the ring with some purpose. I think he has just got better and better and is now just coming to his peak. He has a lovely coat and strong well made quarters which he uses to power around the ring. A classy exhibit who I am sure will gain his title shortly. I awarded him the RCC going down to his older half brother who I felt was just a little more balanced.

2nd McLarnon's "Glenavna Journey South". An eye-catching dog with a handsome head in beautiful coat and condition by the same sire as the winner, however although he was better balanced he did not move quite as well as the winner. The third placed here was close up and moved better than the 2nd but just lost out on shoulder placement to the above. A trio of lovely dogs.

3rd Naylor and Morrison's "Anlory Bonarda"

Open Dog (5) 0 abs

1st Edden and Crocker's "Sh.Ch. Meadway Morrisey". A dog I have liked from a puppy and I was so pleased to have the opportunity to go over him today. It immediately strikes you that everything is in the right place and in perfect symmetry to each other. Extremely well handled and moved around the ring with his tail gently waving from side to side holding his top-line. This handsome dog not only possesses a well constructed body with good layback of shoulder and gentle sloping top-line leading to the correct set on of the tail and well bent stifles, but it was all topped by a glorious rich dark chestnut coat. I had no hesitation in awarding him the CC and BOB. I was delighted to see him perform in the group and he was pulled out into the last six.

2nd Gisby, Gisby and Pike "Sh.Ch. Suteresett Milky Way with Scarletti". Yet another handsome dog sired by the same sire as the CC and RCC winners.   He is a more rugged type of setter who is slightly bigger than the winner. He has a splendid head with raised brows and a lovely expression. Dark rich chestnut coat completed the picture. Good on the move. I still feel however that at 4 years old his best is yet to come. Irish Setters are not a fast maturing breed and usually at their prime around 5 years old.

3rd Pullen and Atkin's "Sh.Ch. Harvencourt Harlem at Jacingail"

Veteran Dog

1st Carter's "Kerrymere Just Rumours".   Good honest dog who moved well. He has a nice head with a sweet expression mirroring his gentle temperament.

2nd Holehan's "Sh.Ch. Erinade Starwars". This dog was presented in lovely coat and condition and belied his 7.5 years. Also moved well but I just preferred the head of the winner.

3rd Cohen's "Caispern Vilette with Shushana"

IRISH SETTER BITCHES

Minor Puppy Bitch (2) 0 abs

1st Chorley-Newton and Chorley's "Kerryfair Crystal Gazer". 2 pretty bitches. The winner was a little more balanced and better over the croup than the second. I liked her head and expression and particularly noted her nice tight feet.

2nd Gardner's "Perfectly Wicked for Danwish". At just 6 months this was her first show. She has a sweet head and moved steadily.

Puppy Bitch (9) 1 abs

1st Longbottom and Stewart-Ritchie's "Gwendariff The Catz Wiskers". A balanced well made puppy with a pleasing head in good coat.  Moved well with confidence around the ring.

2nd Chorley-Newton and Chorley's "Kerryfair Crystal Gazer". Won the minor puppy class. Better in head than the winner but just needs time to mature on.

3rd Mutch's "Astleyview Snow Angel"

Junior Bitch (12) 4 abs

1st Muir's "Romarne One Night Only". A quality bitch of good type who is now coming together very well. Scored in topline, feet, coat and construction and as always from this kennel moved and shown to perfection.

2nd Jarvis' "Lowdon Fairy Footsteps".   Another nice bitch who was unlucky to meet the winner. Balanced and correct in her construction with a good coat. Again pleased to see sound movement.

3rd Watt's Shenanagin Scrumptious.

Post Graduate Bitch (22) 6 abs.

1st Stewart-Ritchie's "Gwendariff Walnut Whip . A close decision as there were some good bitches to choose from here. The winner was presented in lovely coat and condition and shone like a freshly peeled conker. Her feet were not quite as good as the 2nd and 3rd placed but she is well balanced with a good top-line and set on of tail and moved beautifully with her handler.

2nd Wharton's "Thendara Jingle Belle of Jennison".   Similar in type to the winner and again a bitch who was presented in good coat and condition and who also flowed around the ring. I particularly liked her expression. I also liked the third placed here who has the prettiest of heads but she was just not going with the same animation as the first and second.

3rd Heron's "Caskeys Delphine"

Limit Bitch (17) 7 abs.

1st Weller's "Suteresett Wispa at Juledeane".   Some very nice bitches to choose from in this class. The winner was one I judged as a yearling, I liked her then and I like her now. I loved her head and expression. She flows from her head to her tail and I like the style she exhibits when she moves around the ring. Not in her top coat but she has plenty of type and pleased me enough to award her the RCC.

2nd Muir's "Romarne Savannah".   Another well constructed bitch who scored in hind quarters and feet and as such exhibited good movement around the ring. Beautifully presented and handled. It is easy to see why she has done so well. The third placed here was close up and it is easy to see why she has just got her crown.

3rd Lokamp-Sommer and Lokamp's "Copper's Bubble of Joy"

Open Bitch (6) 1 abs.

1st Backman's "Int. Ch. Copper's Magical Bubble". A classy bitch, so feminine. I liked her a lot. As soon as I looked at her I knew she would be my ticket winner. She moved with grace and elegance and filled the eye. There is no exaggeration anywhere. I gave her litter sister the CC last time I judged and her half brother got the dog CC this time. Sadly their sire Sh.Ch. Caskeys Concept died earlier this year but what a legacy he has left behind. I awarded her the bitch CC.

2nd Chorley-Newton and Chorley's "Kerryfair All in Red". A very nice bitch, strong and well made of good type. I liked her head and expression and although she was a little heavy she moved well with purpose on sound limbs and feet. She was in excellent coat.

3rd Naylor and Morrison's Bardonhill Singing Skies Over Anlory.

Veteran Bitch (2) 0abs.

1st Waterton's "Lynwood Strands of Silk At Sandstream"   She is so sweet with her grey face. She has lovely shoulders and is still elegant at nearly 12 years of age. Clearly still enjoys showing.

2nd Watt's "Sh. Ch. Shenanagin Shooting Star". I liked this bitch and thought at first she would be my winner but I felt she was just a little heavy today. Good head with a strong top-line and balanced outline. Moved well.
