Critique - Judge: Mrs Lesley Armstrong Rodgers

I would firstly like to thank the exhibitors for accepting me as the replacement judge for dear Ann Cook whose appointment this should have been. It is always most difficult to take over someone else’s appointment. I am sure she would have enjoyed her day as much as I did. The weather was very kind and the new layout for Driffield was superb. Well done to all the Committee on the change. It really did seem to work. well.

I found my main winners were of excellent type, however I noted that particularly in the males where some lovely dogs were simply carrying far too much weight, and in some cases lacking muscle. An Irish should be racy and show this on the move !

MINOR PUPPY DOG ( 4,0 )

1st. Hogarth’s Redclyst Flash. A handsome headed puppy with correct head planes, lovely dark eye and raised brow. Well bodied for one so young with very good bone, short coupling and well developed rear quarters. He looked balanced and on the move went soundly with tail held correctly. Shown in lovely coat of super quality. Best Dog Puppy. Well done.

2nd. Powis’s Amberwave Fantabulous. A nice headed boy with kind eye, and possessing a good spring of rib and good bone. Ample rear angulation and correctly set on tail. Shown in lovely coat, however I felt that he was just not as together at this stage as my winner.

3rd.Glasper’s Eusanit Action Master at Denetop

PUPPY DOG ( 5,2 )

1st. Sturrock’s Forfarian I’m Sexy An I Know It. J.W. A really lovely headed boy with the most appealing expression and having a lovely finish to his muzzle. Kind dark eye, and raised brows. Standing really well with the desired gentle sloping topline. Good angulation throughout and correct tail set. Moved well once he decided to settle.

2nd Stewart & Ritchie-Smith’s Gwendariff The Big Atraxion. Nicely balanced boy with a good head, arched neck into well laid shoulders. Ample spring of rib. Moved out well. I just preferred the head and eye of the winner, nevertheless a nice puppy to go over with some very desirable attributes.

3rd. Savage’s Gwendariff The Ringmaster

JUNIOR DOG ( 10,3 )

1st. Holley’s Wynjill Well I Am J.W. A really lovely young dog both standing and moving. He has a beautiful head with that wistful expression When you look in his eyes he just melts you !. Well off for bone with correct shoulder placement and such lovely tight feet. Ample rear angulation and correct over the croup Shown in lovely bloom with adequate feathering. He moved soundly around the ring from his strong rear quarters with his tail carried correctly at all times.

2nd. Naylor, Morrison & Greenan’s Anlory Keltic Blue Sky J.W. I have always admired this young dog and was not disappointed when going over him. He has a handsome head with lots of work. Well placed shoulder and a very good spring of rib. Well boned. Short coupled with strength and well muscled rear quarters which showed in his movement today. Presented in lovely coat in both condition and colour. Still maturing and I personally think that his best is yet to come.

3rd. Venables’s Deevonville Conquistado

YEARLING DOG ( 6,0 )

1st. Stewart & Ritchie-Smith’s Gwendariff Whippersnapper J.W. I thought that this young dog to be a star in the making. Handsome youngster that I have always admired as he passed up through his classes, and today he just captured me Shown in his best bib and tucker with a lovely head, which is so soft and appealing A lovely kind expressive eye showing stop and raised brow. Beautiful clean outline and looked so together with no lumps and bumps to be found. Arched neck into well laid shoulders. Good return of upper arm and pronounced sternum. Ample spring of rib and sound rear quarters. I liked his correct gentle sloping outline, so desirable for the Irish.. Moved with such style and purpose carrying his tail level with his back. Just fell for him and had no hesitation in awarding him the Reserve Challenge Certificate.

2nd. Venables’s Deevonville Conquistador. An upstanding young dog of good size with ample bone and substance. Has a good head with work and correct almond shaped, dark and expressive eye. Lovely depth of chest and ample rear angulation. Moved well once he decided to co-operate with his handler, as today he was quite a handful. Shown in beautiful coat and condition.

3rd. Heppell’s Deevonville Santana

POST-GRADUATE DOG ( 14,5 )

This quality class headed by litter brothers, both with very similar attributes.

1st O’Connor’s Caispern Polonius. I just loved the balance of this dog possessing a beautiful masculine head yet without any coarseness. Good stop and that so desirable quizzical expression that only the Irish have. Quite mature for his age but with nothing over done in any way. Arched neck, correct shoulder placement. Well off for bone, reasonably short coupled and very good rear angulation. Shown in super coat and condition A very stylish mover and I liked the way he carried his tail level with the back with that all important wagging action.

2nd. Cohen’s Caispern Lorenzo With Shushana J.W. So very similar to his brother and having all the attributes. Nice head with dark expressive eye. Good body properties, along with excellent feet. He too was also shown in lovely coat and condition. Moved well around the ring from strong quarters. I feel sure these two boys will change places on many occasions.

3rd. Swainston’s Togipoto Ice God At Glenvarna

LIMIT DOG (13, 5)

1st. Naylor and Morrison’s Anlory Bonarda J.W. A very nice outline on this handsome headed male, undoubtedly masculine but not at all coarse. Pleasing eye in shape and colour, raised brow, showing stop and correct finish to muzzle. Arched neck into well laid shoulders, tight elbows. Excellent depth of chest and well ribbed up. Ample bone. Super rear quarters and very well muscled. Shown in lovely bloom. My only criticism is that I just thought he was carrying slightly too much weight and so although he moved correctly he seemed a little lethargic in the run off in the challenge.

2nd. Lewis’s Deaconara Danse De Bleu Avec Dotcomsetter J.W. I really did like this dog and thought on first overview he could well have won this class today. I find his head so typical, well chiseled with the most appealing expression. Neck of correct length and well placed shoulders. He excels in forechest and depth of chest. Firm topline with correct tail set. Excellent rear quarters. Moved out well . Unfortunately today his coat let him down as it was not in such good condition. A real shame !

3rd. Rance’s Mayfred Mr Magnifico

OPEN DOG ( 6, 1)

1st. Edden & Crocker’s Sh. Ch. Meadway Morrisey. A dog who for me just oozes quality. It was a pleasure to be given the chance to go over him. Has the most appealing head and expression so very typical of what is desired in the breed. Every thing simply fits into place and it is easy to see why he is the Champion he is. Straight front with excellent bone with the neatest of feet Well laid shoulders with good return of upper arm, great depth to body, well ribbed up. Correct over the croup. Strong well angulated quarters which he uses so well on the move. His movement is perfection and he simply never stops showing with his tail action a joy to see. Shown in wonderful coat, both in quality and in colour. I was more than pleased to award him the Challenge Certificate and Best Of Breed and completed his day by being short listed in the Group. Very well done.

2nd. Gisby, Gisby & Pike’s Sh. Ch. Suttersett Milky Way with Scarletti. Another handsome quality male of good size and type. Owns the most beautiful head and is a really lovely dog to over. Super neck and shoulder placement Good bone and substance. Clean outline with well sprung ribs and strong loin. Ample rear angulation and correctly set on tail. Moved out well. Shown in lovely coat and condition. Just preferring the panache of my winner today.

3rd. Ciechonska’s Copper’s Champagne On Ice At Aoibheanne J.W. (Imp)

GOOD CITIZENS DOG ( 3,1 )

1st . Heppell’s Deevonville Santa. This young dog seemed much more relaxed in this class and consequently showed himself off to more advantage.. A good sized youngster with a kind eye and low set ears Having the correct gentle sloping topline and well bent stifles. Moved well enough once settled but I felt he just was not as happy has he could have been today. A shame for both him and his very patient owner.

2nd. Rowan & Smith’s Lotushill Masterclass At Grisdale. Nice headed boy with a good eye. Arched neck straight front, Perhaps could benefit from a little more bone. Possessing a good bend of stifle and gentle sloping topline when stood. Shown in lovely coat, both in colour and condition. Just needs to settle on the move..

MINOR PUPPY BITCH ( 3,1 )

1st. Powis’s Amberwave Feather. A really pretty headed 7 month old with lots of work and the sweetest expression. Was rather a handful today and really did not want to co-operate with her handler at all but I saw more than enough to assess her qualities. Looked really balanced when standing. Lovely bone and substance yet still feminine with a good topline and correct tailset. Very good rear angulation Moved out well once she eventually decided to settle. A lovely baby.

2nd. Stewart & Ritchie-Smith’s Gwendariff Hidden Rainbow. Pretty head on this 7 months old puppy. Very racy in outline and ultra feminine having a nice head with dark almond eye. Ample rear angulation and correct over croup. Moved well for a baby holding her topline when viewed in side gait. Shown in lovely dark coat in good condition.

PUPPY BITCH ( 9,3 )

1st. Longbottom & Stewart-Ritchie’s Gwendariff The Catz Wiskers. I really fell for this beautiful balanced baby of nearly 12 months. Looked the part with her pretty head with that true Irish expression, super outline when standing, good bone and neat feet. Ample depth of chest and strong loin. Good width to her well muscled rear quarters down to her correctly set on tail displaying with enthusiasm throughout. Shown in real hard condition, which today showed in her driving action on the move. Best Puppy. Well Done.

2nd. Sturrock’s Forfarian Hey Sexy Lady. A real sweetie and so close up to my winner today. Possessing for me a classic head, with that lovely dark eye and so desired raised brow, not always seen today !. Correct body proportions and showed well for her handler once she mastered the rather uneven ground ! Today not in her full coat and so had to be content with 2nd place, but when she is in full coat and a little more mature I am sure will trouble the best.

3rd. Borthwick’s Northamber Runs Riot At Lotushill

JUNIOR BITCH ( 11,1 )

A super class of quality bitches.

1st. Humphrey’s Millcroft Havana Moon Over Henaleas J.W. A feminine headed bitch with low set ears, with almond shaped dark and expressive eye. Well angulated both front and rear. Really well boned with good depth of chest and well set on tail. Shown in excellent order throughout with a pleasing outline when standing. Moved true and with style holding her topline correctly at all times. Presented in very nice coat condition of lovely dark chestnut in colour.

2nd. Holley’s Wynjill Well Known J.W. Another really pretty lady. An a elegant picture when standing, racy and full of quality. Pretty head with a sweet expression, arched neck into well laid shoulders. Strong angulated quarters, moving true and with enthusiasm. Shown in lovely coat of good quality.

3rd. Muir’s Romarne One Night Only J.W.

YEARLING BITCH ( 8,1 )

1st. Swainston’s Glenvarna Dora The Explorer J.W. What a truly elegant young lady this is. Superb outline when standing with a gentle sloping topline. So well constructed from her beautiful head to the tip of her bee sting tail. Has that sheer mischievous look of the Irish when holding her head in your hands. Good finish to her muzzle. Arched neck into well laid shoulders with good return of upper arm and ample forechest. Well barrelled ribs, strong coupling and well developed hindquarters Shown in lovely coat and condition. Moved true with purpose holding her topline at all times. I was so pleased to award her the Reserve Challenge Certificate. I am not sure who was more surprised, myself or her lucky owner. One I could have taken home.

2nd. Wheeldon’s Bardonhill Carrie Anne For Colemist. A real sweetie with a pretty head and expression and kind dark eye. Possessing a lovely outline when standing with good angulation throughout. She has enough bone and reasonable rib Correct over croup Shown in ample coat of good condition Moved quite well carrying her tail correctly.

3rd. Heppell’s Deevonville La Paloma

POST-GRADUATE BITCH (17,7)

Three truly lovely girls who I am sure will change places on many occasions.

1st. Holley’s Gwendariff Soda Pop to Wynjill. A real eye catching bitch of quality, looking so elegant both standing and on the move. Refined head with a beautiful soft expression. Arched neck into well laid back shoulders with good return of upper arm. Straight front, strong bone and neat feet. Has really strong hindquarters which she used to advantage on the move together with that so desirable lashing tail action. Completed the picture by being shown in fabulous coat and condition.

2nd. Humprey’s Henaleas Carry On Flirting J.W. Another beautiful headed lady who is so well constructed and presented an elegant outline in profile. Refined head with quizzical expression, dark eye and low set ears. Good finish to foreface. Excellent bone and body properties. Moved positively round the ring. Shown in super coat. Just preferring the front of my winner.

3rd. Stewart-Ritchie’s Gwendariff Walnut Whip

LIMIT BITCH ( 10,4 )

1st. Mutch’s Astleyview Summer Fox.. I was drawn to this bitch when she first entered the ring. So typical, elegant but with substance. Exquisite head with so much work, lovely dark almond eye and that soft desirable expression. Lovely raised brow and good finish to muzzle. Well laid shoulders and super firm topline. Well ribbed with strong rear hindquarters. Correct over croup. Moved freely with true action when viewed from any angle. I did consider her in the challenge but just felt whilst her coat in was good condition she just for me today lacked the furnishings needed for higher honours.       .

2nd. Muir’s Romarne Savannah J.W. A lovely dark coated bitch of quality. Typical head with a kind expression. Arched neck into well shoulder with good forechest . Ample depth of chest, straight front and neat cat like feet. Well ribbed up and strong in loin. Well muscled rear quarters which she used on the move.

3rd. Henderson’s Sametsuz Call Girl J.W.

OPEN BITCH   (10,4 )

1st. Hogsflesh’s Sh. Ch. Lyngor Living Water J.W. What a truly wonderful bitch this is. She simply screams breed type, standing so correct with that so desirable gentle sloping topline. Her head in profile can be seen as two bricks lying parallel, with such a kind eye, just like an unshelled almond as the standard requests, with a good stop between. The most wistful but humorous expression, she looks at you with sheer devilment as only an Irish can. Super length of neck into well laid shoulder and good return of upper arm. Ample bone with the neatest of feet. Great depth to her chest and so well ribbed up. Strong in loin. Excellent rear angulation and tailset. Shown in fabulous coat and condition. Movement so powerful with great forward reach and drive from behind. I had no hesitation in awarding her the Challenge Certificate. Very well done.

2nd. Waterton’s Sh. Ch. Lynwood Kissed By An Angel J.W. Another lovely bitch presenting a most pleasing outline and you can see why she has Show Champion status. She too has a gentle sloping topline. Possessing substance yet retaining elegance. Her head so pretty with a kind dark eye and wistful expression showing stop with low set ears carried neatly close to the head. Good reach of neck, well ribbed up and ample rear quarters. Moved true but today seemed a little lacking in exuberance.

3rd .Hunter & Brown Fairhaven Louise Mountbatten At Braidmount (Imp)

GOOD CITIZENS BITCH (4,1)

1st. Waterton’s Lynwood Strands Of Silk At Sandstream J.W. Sh CM Oh how wonderful this young 12 year old is. She still retains a fabulous topline and moves with lashing tail as if still a youngster. She certainly still enjoys being at the shows Her head is so beautiful and even more so now she is so grey. Her body properties so good for her age. A well deserved first placing. I remember giving her Best Bitch many years ago and I still think she’s super.

2nd. Davie’s Lochfrae Affinity. A very pretty bitch with a really lovely expression She has a good outline and is racy in appearance. Good neck and shoulders with ample rear quarters. Presented in lovely bloom. Moved quite well.
