Critique - Judge: Mrs Pat Stockton (Kespas)

Thanks to all of the exhibitors for enabling me to have one of my favourite ever days! I was privileged to have a top quality entry from the first to last class and there was absolutely no dog without some measure of merit. That said, what has happened to the lovely Irish setter head? Plain, wide and flat skulls were far too prevalent. Rear movement was also a disappointment with width between the rear legs on the move more the exception than the rule. On the plus side there were very few gay tails.

Minor Puppy (10, 1abs)

1st. Prangle & Shaw Rainey’s Heathclare Old Glory. What a little sweetie! Well-made baby of 6 months, pleasing head with lots more to come, good angulation at the shoulder and sturdy rear quarters. Straight front and has a good sternum. Moved steadily on neat feet with that endearing roly poly puppy action. Most promising. BPD

2nd Smith & Gardner’s Carlotties Clever Cookie. Rangier puppy with a lovely head, eye and earset. Pleasing sloping topline and good finish to croup, nicely balanced outline. Not as positive on the move as 1.

3rd Cohen’s Aoibheanne’s Rough Diamond with Shushana

Puppy ( 8, 2 abs)

1st Powis’ Amberwave Fantabulous. Well balanced young dog, standing over plenty of ground. Pleasing and well worked in head, showing good stop and kindly eye. Good neck and front angulation, I particularly liked his overall strength of bone and tidy feet. Moved out well with a co-ordinated stride.

2nd Aoibheanne’s R.D. This boy was quite a handful for his owner. Very nice head with good finish to skull, combined with a delightful expression, arched neck, good body properties. Today he was a bit erratic on the move, but more settled here than in his earlier class

3rd Webster’s Glenvarna Fire and Ice at Hooley

Junior (15, 1 abs)

1st Hemmings’ Orlanset the Rocker JW. Having admired this dog from a young puppy, it was a pleasure to assess him. Lovely balanced frame, good head and expression, smashing upper arm angulation, well ribbed body, sweeping rear quarters, and short length from hock to heel. Presented in excellent dark coat. Eye-catching, active mover. Did well to head this top quality class.

2nd Meadows’ Gwendariff the Big Attraxion. Charming dog of lovely breed type, just giving a little away in maturity here. Very attractively balanced head with low ear set, good finish to muzzle, moved soundly on well boned limbs and fabulous tight feet, carrying his tail correctly. Unlucky to meet 1 in such top form.

3rd Cox’s Tiroen Too Hot to Handle

Yearling (12, 1 abs)

1st Rutherford Clonageera Kinross love Barolo(Imp) I loved the stature of this dog with his super outline, well sprung ribs and his well angled fore and rear quarters. He is just slightly strong through the skull for my preference, but this is outweighed by his other qualities. Excellent body condition and muscletone, has great bone and moves with an easy style and flair. Already has a beautiful chestnut coat and is well feathered. He is of great potential and I have no doubt that with time he will trouble the best.

2nd Holley’s Wynjill Well I Am JW. Smaller dog than my winner, but just as well proportioned. Scored highly with his lovely head and countenance, topline and hind quarters. Not as positive on the move as my winner, but has many admirable breed characteristics

3rd Naylor, Morrison & Greenan’s Anlory Keltic Blue Sky JW

Graduate ( 10, 3 abs)

1st Stockers Kirkavagh Xakala. Medium sized boy with a super outline. Correct head with no sign of coarseness, flowing topline from head through to his pleasing croup and tailset. Deep chest, well angulated at the hock. Presented in top condition and full coat, well handled to show off his qualities. Moved out with a fluid balanced action, using his tail correctly.

2nd Cuddy’s Aoibheanne’s Quite the Rebel by Balbriggan. This boy was quite a different type to my winner, but was also pleasing on the eye. Scored with his head properties, very clean outline, straight front and good assembly in both fore and rear angles My notes say, ‘ not flamboyant, but a soundly constructed dog’. Moved well and steadily.

3rd Venables’ Deevonville Conquistador Del Arunset

Post Grad (16, 0abs)

1st Luto’s Rappatty Excalibur JW. This is such a well-balanced dog, perhaps not the flashiest, but difficult to ignore for his correct construction and sound movement. A shade strong in skull for me, but has a pleasing expression and eye. Strength through the neck, tight at elbow and ample forechest, sturdy through the loin and excellent tail set. Solid, well-muscled rear quarters let him move with fluidity and balance around the ring.

2nd O‘Connor’s Caispern Polonius. I preferred the more refined head on this dog, who had a more rugged appearance than 1st . Well-constructed throughout, with balanced angulation fore and aft. Quality coat, although it was somewhat unruly. Moved with drive and style, but not with the positive footfalls of my class winner

3rd Hyslop’s Gwendariff the Specialist

Limit ( 12, 0 abs)

Superb class headed by:

1st Stewart and Ritchie –Smith’s Gwendariff Whippersnapper JW. My idea of an elegant racy setter, I just loved his outline both in profile and on the move. Moved with a lightness and panache that was lacking in so many today. Attractive masculine head, showing stop, low set ear, muscular arched neck. Ribs well sprung leading to proportionate coupling to hind quarters. Strong through the pasterns, ending in lovely thickly padded tight feet. Expertly handled and presented in immaculate gleaming coat and condition, with very good muscle tone. Both this boy and my RCC winner scored highly with their great ring presence. Still young and no doubt his best is still to come, I was pleased to award him the CC, his 3rd   - congratulations

2nd Stubbs’ Riverbrue Zeus. This is a good looking dog of high merit. Unexaggerated in outline, pleasing in head with no coarseness, fine shoulder placement, ribs well sprung and carried well back, firm over the loin and quarters, good second thigh, moved out with a stable, balanced action.

3rd Gardner’s Mayfred Mr Moondance JW

Open ( 7, 1 abs)

1st Milligan Bott & Bott’s Sh Ch Thendara Pot Noodle JW I have watched this dog since a puppy and what a fine setter he has matured into. There is no doubting he is all male from his masculine head to the tip of his tail. Lean head, refined in skull with good length to foreface and kind expressive eyes below chiselled brows. Correct density of bone to match his admirable physique, ending in neat feet. I love his head carriage on the move which precedes his superbly held topline and tail. As always from this exhibitor, this dog was beautifully presented in full coat and was so unlucky to come up against the limit winner today. RCC

2nd Edden & Crocker’s Sh Ch Meadway Morrisey. Another great favourite of mine. Top quality all through. Gorgeous balanced head and excels in forechest and forehand construction. Another excellent mover with wonderful forward reach. This was such a close decision for the top honours, the overall stature of the class winner just tipping the scales in his favour.

3rd Crosswell’s Sh Ch Gwendariff Mr Noticeme JW

Veteran (4, 1 abs)

1st Tapper’s Kedalita the Merry Tyler. This dog appealed very much for his correct build. Absolutely no exaggeration with each part fitting smoothly into the next. Good head with nice finish to foreface and raised brows, proportionate body, good finish to croup. Showed well for his handler.

2nd Cohen’s Caispern Villette with Shushana JW Sh.CM . Beautifully headed dog with a true Irish expression, dark correctly shaped eyes and good finish to muzzle. Well angled in both fore and rear quarters, and eye-catching on the move. Just found him a little long in back and lost out in topline to the winner

3rd Ashley-Turner’s Baibreeze Fred Astaire

Minor puppy (12, 0 abs)

1st Driver’s Caskeys Mystique at Stearnwood. Lovely puppy - chunky and with substance. Good head with nice dark eye and correctly shaped skull. She has a nice crest to her neck and a pleasing depth through chest and loin, finished off with a thick glossy coat. Sound in movement once settled.

2nd Holehan’s Ferasheen Primrose. Another engaging baby with pleasing substance. Scored over 1st with her very pretty head, but at this stage cannot match her shapely rear quarters. Good straight front and nicely presented. Moved well.

3rd Prangle’s Heathclare Que Sera.

Puppy (6, 2 abs)

1st Catling’s Shandwick Love in a Mist for Teleri. This lovely bitch took my eye immediately. Refined and elegant and has a maturity in her assured stance and carriage on the move. Pretty and feminine in head, nicely constructed throughout. On the day would have liked her just a shade more positive in rear movement, but she scored highly in all other departments. She is most promising and I wish her good luck for the future. Best Puppy.

2nd Powis ‘ Amberwave feather. This bitch merits highly in forechest and front angulation. Feminine head and nice expression, reachy neck, sloping topline, free sound mover, presented in super condition. Overall an elegant youngster.

3rd Caskeys M at S

Junior (10, 2 abs)

1st Rose-Hay’s Carrue Shower of Rain at Cataluna. I do not recollect seeing this young bitch before but she impressed me sufficiently to win this good class. Pleasing head with parallel planes and raised brows, Mature in outline, well-constructed forequarters, good ribcage, rich dark coat. Best mover in the class with her far reaching, balanced stride,

2nd Berry & Morris’ Brinara Vanity Fair JW. Another appealing, well balanced bitch. Pretty refined head, good neck blending smoothly into her gently sloping topline and correct tailset, nice oval bone ending in neat tight feet. Moved very well and pushed hard for the 1st   spot.

3rd Cox’s Tiroen to the Manor Born

Special Yearling (13, 1 abs)

1st Holley’s Wynjill Well Known JW. I really fell for this super young bitch who headed one of the strongest classes of the day. Delightful head with raised brows and a hint of naughtiness in her eyes, strong through the neck, gentle slope from withers to croup, balanced outline. Thick, luxurious coat and personality plus which showed in her animated movement. Had she been just a tad wider moving behind, would have been in serious contention for top honours. I have no doubt she will go on to have a sparkling show career.

2nd. Muir’s Romarne One Night Only. Different in type to 1 but equally appealing, full of breed type, slightly more refined all through and sleeker in outline. Sweet head and correct shape to skull, balanced in body properties and presented in a dark glossy coat. Beautifully schooled to show off her composed, graceful movement.

3rd Bayne’s Corranroo Rainbow Kisses

Grad (10, 5 abs)

1st Mugford’s Lynwood Happy as a Lark JW Pleasing bitch overall without exaggeration. Balanced outline and put down in excellent condition. Lovely lean head, neck well set, good length and slope to backline, nice width to thigh. Lashing tail enhanced her stylish movement

2nd Stevenson’s Lochlorien Scully Foxes Andley. Built of a slightly scopier frame, this bitch impressed with her balanced structure, refined head, straight front and finish to croup. Carrying just the correct amount of weight, moved comfortably on a good stride

3rd Blackshaw’s Lanstara Cupid’s boogie

Post Grad (11, 4 abs)

1st Roffey’s Gwendariff the Real Thing. I very much liked this girl’s attitude to life. She came into her own on the move, striding out with dynamism and animation, with great use of her tail and hocks and head held high. Her head is pretty with a kind expression and nice ear placement. Clean throat and smooth over the shoulder, good forechest, and ribs had spring and depth .Presented in glossy, luxuriant coat.

2nd Henderson’s Sametsuz in a Fankle. Ultra feminine bitch all through with an appealing head and outline, straight front, powerful hindquarters, but I would like a little more angulation to her upper arm. Smooth mover with elegant carriage and presented in great coat and condition.

3rd Mann & Condron’s Covarney Annabelle with Hopstone

Limit (15, 2 abs)

1st Evans, Evans & Crocker’s Neathamill Nerissa. My star of the day. I have long admired this beautiful bitch and she did not disappoint me one iota. Most fabulous lean head with plenty of chiselling and gentle expression in her lovely eyes. Low ear set, good length and strength to neck and such a lovely sweep from backskull to tail set. Proportionate length in coupling which gave her the scope to drive powerfully from her well-constructed hindquarters. She is a most accurate and fluid mover, true both coming and going. I was pleased to be able to award her the CC and BOB. I am sure that her late breeder would have been justifiably proud…

2nd   Lippett’s   Neathamill Isabella at Clonageera. Litter sister to 1 and shares many of her attributes. Again, a most appealing head and expression. A shade lighter in coat and feathering, firm topline with good finish to croup . Could not quite match 1 in return of upper arm, but first rate hindquarters. Moved out with animation and a scopy, balanced stride. Put in a polished performance and I liked her very much.

3rd Henderson’s Sametsuz Call Girl JW

Open (8, 1 abs)

1st Naylor & Morrison’s Sh Ch Anlory Carimena JW This bitch has a stunning outline, both stacked and on the move. Beautiful sculptured skull and most appealing eye and countenance, flows cleanly from the tip of her nose to the end of her tail. The relationship of angles between her upper arm and shoulder is mirrored in her hindquarters   enabling her to move out with style and great propulsion, holding a firm topline throughout – a consummate showgirl. RCC in very hot competition

2nd Stewart & Ritchie-Smith’s Sh Ch Gwendariff Fizzy Pop JW. Another top quality bitch. Well-made throughout with a clean outline, pretty head, good through the neck and shoulder, muscled quarters. Animated and stylish on the move, with good use of her tail.

3rd Waterton’s Sh Ch Lynwood Kissed by an Angel at Sandstream JW

Veteran (6, 2abs)

1st Morgan’s Kerrsienna A Paige in History for Deaconara JW Sh.CM (imp). 9 ½ year charming bitch that I have always liked. Love her head and expression, now enhanced by a sprinkling of grey. Compact but correctly built and such a happy girl on the move. Presented in lavish coat

2nd Stephenson’s Drumwhaur Heart of Gold. Much bigger, rangier bitch of good type and again, structurally sound. Feminine head and expression, nice angulation fore and rear. Moved soundly and with style

3rd Russell’s Melmara Mezza Luna
