Entry: 209 Dogs making 225 Entries.

My sincere thanks to you all for such a fantastic high entry of 209 Dogs making 225 Entries.– it was an honour to judge your dogs. Many beautiful setters were present today and in almost all of the classes I could have placed many more exhibits. Overall some lovely dogs and a good depth of quality apparent, particularly in some of the hard fought higher classes.

A shame that we were inside on such a beautiful, sunny summer’s day. I just had to wonder why we couldn’t have been outside when the venue, a livestock exhibition centre, is surrounded by grassed areas ideal for rings? Whilst our ring was a large one it had numerous uneven dips with drain covers dotted all over it which didn’t help handlers or the dogs when moving. The venue was also quite noisy and echoed and I feel that this was unsettling for quite a few of the exhibits, particularly in the lower classes, and this along with dodging the hollows did not help movement. On this occasion I made more allowance for this than I would normally do, particularly in the lower classes.

My sincere thanks to my two very efficient stewards Ciaran and Helen Howell who kept everything moving efficiently throughout the long day. A Special mention for Ciaran Howell, the young man who worked really hard was polite and helpful to all the exhibitors on the day. We need more young people like him coming into the dog world.

1st: McLarnon Gwendariff Nuts Aboutu Glenavna –quality puppy 7 months old and with well developed body and hindquarters, pleasing head with good eye colour, clean lines over neck all set off by a thick dark coat coming through. Needs to steady on the move

2nd: Kniveton Hot Sensation's Orstone Cowboy – nicely shaped boy, again with good body development and shown in hard muscular condition, he coped well with the floor but I preferred the head, expression and overall type of above

1st: Sandle & Farndell Cordarragh We Will Rock You – at 10 mths, I liked him for his balance, soundness, head shape and outline free from exaggeration , well developed in body and shown in good coat, Needs to settle down in movement though, as did many of the puppies here today. Best Puppy dog.

2nd: Milligan-Bott & Bott Thendara Commitment shown in lovely condition excels in body and topline. Although erratic at the moment,I liked his movement, particularly when viewed going around the ring. Just needs time to tighten in front

1st: Crocker & Siddle Copper's War Of Roses very much my type of setter. Refined and elegant and medium sized, he excels in balance. Gorgeous head and expression, clean over neck and shoulders and has correct gently sloping topline with good set-on of tail. In lovely body, coat and condition and expertly handled to show off his many virtues.

2nd: Lorrimer Danaway Distinguished – quite different type from above being overall a bigger dog but has much to like about him,. Well bodied and true front and rear angulation standing on strong hindquarters with arched and neat feet

Class 1762 YD (10 Entries) Abs: 4

1st: Cox Tiroen Too Hot To Handle JW loved his rugged type and quality which gave him the class, lovely earset and nicely worked head with pleasing expression. Shown in excellent coat. Being a true Irishman, his over exuberance whilst moving almost cost him his place and he will need to settle and move with more control when he goes into the higher classes.   However as he is a young dog and this was a difficult venue I forgave him this today.

2nd: Hemmings Orlanset The Rocker JW, built on a smaller frame and a boy with lovely balance throughout. Excels in outline and correct topline. He was handled to advantage and showed himself off well whilst on the move. Excellent well presented coat and hard muscular condition. Not quite the head of above however today it was a close call as he pushed the winner hard.

1st: Markham Rubratinneh Red Cliff - Balanced in outline and with well developed hindquarters. Showed in beautiful coat and condition. Pleasing in head properties although a little more round in eye than I would prefer. He moved well to win this strong class.

2nd: Holley Wynjill Well I Am JW another lovely boy at just over two years old he is not so forward as above in maturity of body or coat. Standing on good feet and with strong hindquarters. Pleasing in head and eye and nice finish to muzzle with clean neckline.

1st: Mugford Lynwood Lark In The Dark JW Obviously from a line I have used myself, and I am not going to hide the fact that he is exactly my type of dog. Loved him for his medium size without any exaggeration. I have watched him develop from a raw and immature youngster to the almost finished adult he is today. He has a good depth of chest and a gently sloping topline to a correct set on of tail. Pleasing in head, he is built on elegant lines with a nice turn of stifle and good tight feet. He moved soundly using his tail. In a short time will trouble the best I am sure

2nd: Bouttell & Burbridge Ixia Josiah At Merryborne Another 2 year old put down in immaculate coat and condition by this owner. Body with good depth of chest, topline firm with correct set on of tail. Attractive head and eye and showed himself off well going around the ring.

Excels in firm topline and tailset and shown in very good coat and condition, He has strong well developed hindquarters with gave good steady drive when on the move

2nd: Lauwers, Milligan-Bott & Bott Thendara Satisfaction Jun Ch -Striking dog. Loved his head and expression, longer cast in body than above, but overall a nice shape with lovely reach of clean neckline and masses of coat,. Movement with good drive but a little wide when viewed from behind.

A fabulous class of dogs all of whom I have admired on many occasions. I would have been thrilled to have given any one of them first place.

1st: Stewart & Ritchie-Smith Sh Ch Gwendariff Whippersnapper JW – over the years I have judged quite a few dogs produced by this kennel, some I have liked and some I haven’t placed. Quite simply I think this dog is outstanding and the best yet from a strong line of quality exhibits produced by the breeder. He is so balanced throughout – just the right amount of coupling and showing no exaggeration in any way from the tip of his correctly shaped muzzle, pleasing head and eye, clean reach of neck without excessive length. His balance and line gently flows throughout his shoulder and topline and gently slopes to correct set on of tail. He has strong hindquarters and presented in hard muscular condition. All this topped off by a beautifully presented coat. This exhibitor works so hard on her dogs and he was put down in immaculate condition. An exhibit who moved with positive, accurate drive from behind and reach in front as he showed himself off going round the ring. A great showman who I was pleased to award the CC (his 9th I understand) and subsequently Best of Breed.   He went on to be placed 2nd in the Gundog Group. Congratulations. He is only 2 years old at the moment – so really at the beginning of his show career, on this form I think he will go on to be one of the great dogs we will all remember.

2nd: Gisby & Pike Sh Ch Suteresett Milky Way With Scarletti JW – a great favourite of mine, looking well today. Very much the traditional Irish and whilst he doesn’t carry the huge coat of many of his contemporaries he is quality all through. If you are new to the breed and wish to see the classic head of an Irish Setter, please take time to look at this dog. He has the correct chiselling so little seen these days plus lovely eye shape and the melting expression we all so desire. Overall a picture of balance, elegance and type, he moved steadily and well today. When it came to the challenge for the Res.CC I was thinking which one in the line-up would I take home with me? - it was him- Congratulations.

1st: Bouttell Sh Ch Ixia Genevieve Lovely head shape, finish of muzzle and kindly eye on this 8 year old girl, pleasing overall balance and strong hindquarters, she moved happily to win this good class.

1st: Chorley-Newton & Chorley Kerryfair Hattie at 6 months and a few days this little charmer headed a class of babies at varying stages. Liked her over her front, and neckline. Pleasing in head with good eye colour and well developed in body. Standing a bit high on her back end at the moment but hopefully will, in time, drop into her hindquarters. Movement erratic at the moment, along with most others in this class.

2nd: Davie Jonola Secret Love At Lochfrae- another wee baby of 6 months loved her overall shape and balance in outline, with correct set-on of tail. Lovely in head too, just a little apprehensive when being handled as quite a few were in this venue.

1st: Muir Romarne Tickled at 11 months old one of the most mature in the class, she gained her place here on overall soundness, moving with precision and control and didn’t put a foot wrong. Presented immaculately and in hard muscular condition. Although a little level in topline, she pleases in body shape and, as usual with this exhibitor, she was expertly handled to show off her virtues. Best puppy in breed.

2nd: Cooper & Armstrong-Rodgers Rowdenhill Tanqueray Betwixt Scottsway Preferred her in head as a little more refined but. Although of a similar age, giving a little away in maturity at the moment. Strong hindquarters with correct tailset and she moved okay.

I found this class quite difficult to judge as very varied in type and size

1st: Henderson Sametsuz In A Fankle –Although quite different in type from my own setters, this girl couldn’t be denied her place as she didn’t put a foot wrong from the time she entered the ring.   She moved very well. Pretty head and so feminine in expression. Clean over neckline with lovely body and depth of chest carrying just right amount of enough weight and presented in fabulous coat and condition,.

2nd: Sheldon Delsanto Snow Belle JW Feminine and pretty girl. I liked her overall shape and hindquarters with good development of 2nd thigh. A quite different type from first and, as yet, not quite the finish but she pushed the winner hard.

How this girl has come on from the raw, immature puppy she once was, Congratulations to her owners for pursuing the dream and turning her into the fabulous show girl she is today. I was pleased to award her her 3rd CC today.

2nd: Holley Wynjill Well Known JW very well known young lady who has a glittering show career already. At just over 2 years old at the moment she lacks the maturity and coat finish of above but I loved her shape overall and another shown in hard muscular condition which resulted in sound movement.
