Critique - Judges: Dogs: Carolyn Hogsflesh (Lyngor)

I was really looking forward to this appointment as it is quite a while since I have judged dogs and as I have been showing a bitch, I have not taken too much notice of the "boys" so it was very interesting and there were some new ones to me. I would like to thank the ISAE for this invitation, also my stewards for their help on the day and all of the exhibitors for making it a super entry to judge. Most of the dogs were presented in good coat and well muscled but again I have to say while most of them look acceptable from the side, movement still leaves much room for improvement, particularly when viewed from behind. I found one or two iffy mouths but on the plus side, shoulder angulation does seem to be better.

Minor Puppy 9

1 Mclarnon's   GWENDARIFF NUTS ABOUTU GLENAVNA a really chunky pup that is all male, he has a lovely head with dark eyes and a soft expression, good bone, true front, nice neat feet, good topline from reach of neck through to well set tail, the overall picture is one of a dog at just the right stage of development, moving steadily and all topped by a thick textured coat, a very promising puppy

2 Partridge KERRYDOWN ONE MAN not quite as mature looking as the winner but still has really good body construction, balanced head, nice eye and expression, good front, feet and hindquarter angulation, steady on the move but not quite so good in coat but that will come.

3 Savage's TAGAMAGO'S GREAT GATSBY

Puppy 9 (1a)

1 Muir's ROMARNE TAITTINGER JW pleasing, well balanced head with a dark eye and soft expression, good reach of neck set into clean shoulders, gently sloping topline and well sprung ribs, firm over loin and quarters. In good coat and moving steadily. Scored over the second on maturity. Best Puppy Dog and with my co judges agreement BP in Show.

2 GWENDARIFF NUTS ABOUTU GLENAVNA

3 Milligan-Bott & Bott's THENDARA COMMITMENT

Junior 14(1a)

1 Armstrong's MEADWAY MAKENZEY this boy is really coming together, long lean head with refined scull and expressive eyes, he has good bone and substance without being overdone and is well angulated in both fore and hind quarters, with deep well sprung ribs, he has plenty of neck and a strong, firm topline, when moving he keeps his topline and covers the ground with a free, steady stride using his quarters well

2 Macaulay's CASKEYS MISCHIEF OF STYLERSETTS loved this boy's head, refined but with raised brow and dark appealing eyes, super reach of neck set into clean well laid shoulders, he is a shorter cast boy but nevertheless balanced throughout, a close decision but I just preferred the scope and movement of the winner today.

3 Suyk-Wierts ENTICE JAMESON JUNIOR

Yearling 13 (1a)

1 Sturrock's   FORFARIAN I'M SEXY AN I KNOW IT JW well known young dog who has done a lot of winning, he has an eye catching, clean outline when viewed in profile, totally balanced throughout starting at his typically Irish head with dark eyes and soft appealing expression, through good front assembly with deep chest to firm loin and well angulated quarters with correct tail set which he used well on the move. He is maturing nicely but could benefit from a bit less weight.

2 Hogarth's REDCLYST FLASH this young man is beginning to grow into himself now, very pleasing in head, masculine without being too much, he has good reach of neck set into well placed shoulders, nice depth of chest and strong loin, adequate quarters which are well muscled. Just lost out to winner on tail set and carriage

3 Lucas SHANDWICK MAGIC MOMENTS VIA AMBERLIGHT

Special Beginners

1 Davis BRINARA NEW STATESMAN AT CORRIBEG[1] upstanding dog nicely put together throughout, pleasing, balanced head with gentle expression, true in front and with good depth of chest and hind quarter angulation, sound mover though could have moved with a bit more drive and enthusiasm

2 Ashley- Turner GLENLAINE MCLAREN finer type of dog all through, straight front, well sprung ribs, not so good in hindquarters as winner, though happier on the move and in nice coat.

3 Byard CATALUNA SOME LIKE IT HOT

Maiden 8

1 MEADWAY MAKENZY

2 ROMARNE TAITTINGER JW

3Wood's DANAWAY GOODNESS ME

Novice 9

1 MEADWAY MAKENZY

2 ROMARNE TAITTINGER JW

3 Torpy's BARDONHILL JIVE TALKIN

Undergraduate 8

1 Edwards GWENDARIFF THE PINK PANTHER young dog with a pleasant head low set ears and nice finish to muzzle, he has good angulation, bone and feet and moved steadily with purpose, presented in lovely coat and condition

2 Hopewell's ANLORYS KELTIC SPIRIT AT DAVSET more my type of head with a bit more "work" in it, nice dark eye & soft expression, good neck and fore hand, well sprung ribs with depth, just not quite as good as winner in hindquarters.

3 BRINARA NEW STATESMAN AT CORRIBEG

Graduate 11

1 Holley's WYNJILL WELL I AM stylish young dog with freestriding movement, presented in lovely coat, though to be critical I would prefer it a shade darker, he has a masculine, balanced head with a gentle expression and low set ears, good reach of neck, depth of brisket, strong loin & width across his quarters, all contributing to a nice profile.

2 Hemmings ORLANSET THE ROCKER JW this boy is a new one to me, a sound honest dog that needs to be judged to be appreciated he combines depth with substance and catches the eye on the move, everything fits together nicely and presents a pleasing overall picture and topped off with a rich shining coat.

3 Mitchell's AMBLIN'S SWEET WILLIAM

Post Graduate 13 (1a)

1 Pollard's GRAYRIGGE BENEDICT JW what a nice type of dog this is, not a big flashy one but has some really nice qualities about him, an attractive head with soft gentle expression, good bone, front and depth of chest, well ribbed back into strong loin and quarters with good muscle tone, moved soundly.

2 Nicholls DELSANTO SNOW STORM Sh CM another nice type of dog, with much to like about him, the more you look at him the more he appeals, Really well balanced throughout, pleasing in head and body properties, firm topline and good width across strong quarters used well on the move.

3 Williamson's KELJARU LOVELY JUBBLY

Minor Limit 5 (1a)

1 Burbridge & Bouttell's IXIA JOSIAH AT MERRYBORNE I loved this boys head, truly "Irish" with raised brows and gentle expression, low set ears and good foreface, he's so well put together and balanced, good bone and front, deep well sprung ribs, well placed shoulders, gently sloping topline and well developed quarters, happy free mover using his tail.

2 Lucas KERRYFAIR GETS LUCKY OVER AMBERLIGHT JW slightly taller boy, finer in head with soft expressive eyes, Good reach of neck set into clean shoulders, with depth of chest and firm topline, strong loin, and quarters, used well on the move, shown in full coat.

3 Mugford's LYNWOOD LARK IN THE DARK JW

Mid Limit 4(1a)

1 Hill-Decoster's VICARY'S KEYKEEPER this boy really caught my eye as he came into the ring quite a rangy chap but just the kind of head that appeals to me,well chiselled and with raised eyebrows, cheeky expression full of mischief, good reach of neck set into well angulated shoulders, true in front with good bone and neat feet, firm gently sloping topline, strong quarters, covers the ground well on the move.

2 Hendrix & Pil's LARGOWINCH OF ROYAL RESIDENCE NOR JCH this boy was giving his handler a hard time so was not easy to critique, a nice type of dog with no exaggerations, needs to co operate more with his handler to make the best of himself.

3 Buchan's LOSKERAN DREAM MAKER Sh CM

Limit 12 (3a)

1 O'Connor's CAISPERN POLONIUS this boy really stood out for me in this class, so well constructed and presented in great condition, he has the most attractive head with a soft appealing expression and raised eyebrows, true in front with tight feet, clean neck into shoulders, deep chest and firm topline, he has good width across his quarters and uses them to advantage on the move, nice to see him using his tail and moving with purpose. Just not quite the maturity of the older dogs when it came to the challenge.

2 Bott & Allan's EMBER RED HOT CHILI PEPPER OF QUENSHA (Imp Swe) another nice boy, giving his handler on the day a hard time, he has a well chiselled head with a pleasing expression, good reach of neck set into clean shoulders and deep, well sprung ribs, strong well angulated quarters shown off to advantage on the move.

3 Lewis's DEACONARA DANSE DE BLEU AVEC DOTCOMSETTER JW Sh CM

Open 11 (1ab)

I must say thank you again to all the exhibitors in this class for bringing their lovely dogs for me to judge, I know it sounds trite but it was such an honour and a compliment that I felt quite emotional when I'd finished my placings and thanked them.

1 CC &BIS Hogarth's SH CH AVOCET SNOWDRIFT my star of the day, I can't remember ever seeing this boy ever looking so well, he had to pull out all the stops to win this fabulous class. He is all male and has a lovely head with plenty of work about it but no courseness, his typically Irish expression is so appealing, he has good reach of neck set into clean well laid shoulders, super depth of chest and spring of rib, strong loin and quarters with the right amount of angulation and width giving him the power to move freely and with purpose round the ring. At the moment he seems to be carrying just the right amount of weight and his luxurious coat just completes the picture. I was delighted to see him get BIS, well done.

2 & Res CC Pullen & Atkin's SH CH HARVANCOURT HARLEM AT JACINGAIL at first I thought he was going to be my winner, he has an eye catching outline, so well put together throughout with most of the same attributes as the winner, good front assembly and depth, strong well muscled quarters, free stylish movement, he really pushed hard , I just preferred the head and eye of my 1st place boy

3 Gisby & Pike's SH CH SUTERESETT MILKY WAY WITH SCARLETTI JW this boy has always been a favourite of mine since he was a baby, I love his head and the character that oozes out of him and I was really splitting hairs today and he was unfortunate to meet the other two in such good form.

Veteran 6

1 Edwards SH CH GWENDARIFF ROCKIN ROBIN JW upstanding dog with a clean outline and no exaggerations he has a pleasing head and expression, super reach of neck and good depth of chest and well angulated quarters, in fabulous coat and condition this chap looks so well for his age and is such a credit to his owner, still moving with the freedom and style of a youngster.

2 Kniveton's SERRULA PLAYAROUND AT ORSTONE a sound, honest dog with no outstanding faults, except maybe too good an appetite !! He has a balanced attractive head, good bone, deep, well sprung ribs and strong well angulated quarters, he moved soundly and with animation.

3 Need's COVARNEY MOCHA MEETS STOURFORD

Special Field Trial

1 Wigfull & Hartley's ANLORY GAMEKEEPER

2 Jales LAKENHOW CEDAR OF DUNROON

Always difficult to judge field trial classes when the dogs aren't used to this environment but the winner just had the edge as he did stand and cooperate more with his handler, he is a rangier type and both look as though they'd be happier spotting birds !
