Critique - Dogs - Judge - Mrs Gillian Barker-Bell ( Balintyne)

It is of course a great honour to be invited to judge at Crufts, and for most of us a “once in a lifetime” appointment. Three years was a long time off, but suddenly it wasn’t and fear became terror. However “stiff upper lip”, deep breath and get on with it. I was surprised to find some incorrect bites, particularly at this show as qualification is a pre-curser to entry. As usual some classes had more strength than others and good dogs went card less.

Veteran Dog (Entries: 16 Abs: 3)

1. SH CH GWENDARIFF ROCKIN ROBIN JW (MRS S E EDWARDS)

This veteran looked the regal part today. His well balanced head, expressive eye, strong arched neck, clean shoulders, firm topline, unexaggerated angles fore & aft, neat feet, shining coat and sound movement completed the picture. Pleased to award him the Res CC.

2. PL/RO CH GIPSY WIND Z ARISLANDU [ATC AL01200POL] (MS A SZELIGA)

another pleasing exhibit with a well balanced head of correct length and finish, Strong arched neck, firm topline. Good legs & feet, deep ribs. In good coat and moved well.

3. SH CHMULTI/INT CH JONOLA DR DOOLITTLE (MR W & MRS A LAUWERS)

Good type of dog with a pleasing head and expression. Straight front, deep ribs. Steady on the move, but not in the best coat and condition today.

Minor Puppy - Dog (Entries: 1 Abs: 0)

1. ROMARNE UNDER ORDERS (MR S & MRS J L NICHOLLS)

A pity this baby was alone, he could have stood up in company. Most pleasing boy with a good head but still needs the time. Liked his length and finish to foreface, dark expressive eyes, clean neck & shoulder. Strong legs and neat feet. Front and rear angulation right for age, in good coat and moved well, using his tail to advantage.

Puppy - Dog  (Entries: 8 Abs: 0)

1. GWENDARIFF THYME BOMB AT JACWILINS (MR W J & MRS J S WILLIS)

Clean gently sloping outline on this puppy. Good length and finish to foreface, dark eye, not quite the expression yet but his head still needs time to break. Strong arched neck, well angulated front with sternum. Strong legs, ribs deep and well back. Very mature young man in gleaming coat. Moved with style. BPD

2. TAGAMAGO'S GREAT GATSBY (MS M SAVAGE)

Liked the length, balance and expression on this puppies head. Strong neck into shoulder, deep in rib, firm topline. Nicely angulated, coat of good colour and texture. Steady mover.

3. KARIDELL PRINCE CHARMING (MR B A & MRS N G LIMPUS)

A little strong at present, but has time to grow into himself. Strong arched neck, deep in rib and well back. Firm topline, well angulated quarters, dark in coat, Movement needs time to settle

Junior - Dog  (Entries: 20 Abs: 5)

1. THENDARA COMMITMENT (MRS D & MR J N MILLIGAN-BOTT & BOTT)

Racy, full of quality, that is what is asked for, and that is what you get with this young dog. For me he stood out in this class. He is totally Irish with that added something, attitude and ring presence, so sadly lacking in our breed today. Well balanced head with raised brows, dark expressive eye, that little “naughty look”. Good nose and finish to foreface. Strong arched neck flowing into clean firm gently sloping topline. Strong legs, well ribbed and wide quarters. That effortless reaching, driving movement clinched it. Seriously considered, but still very young.

2. GWENDARIFF NUTS ABOUT GLENAVNA (MRS C MCLARNON)

Pleasing young man with a balanced head of good proportions and finish. Dark expressive eye, firm topline, good angles fore & aft and steady on the move. In good coat.

3. HOT SENSATION'S ORSTONE COWBOY (IMP SWE) (MR P F & MRS J KNIVETON)

Not the maturity of the first two. Good length to foreface, raised brows but showing a little more stop. Dark eye. Deep in rib, good angles, firm topline, dark coat. Moved OK

Yearling - Dog  (Entries: 26 Abs: 1)

A good class with some very pleasing dogs going card less

1. COPPER'S GYPSY ROSE [ATC AR00845SWE] (MS A SZELIGA)

Quite different in head, this was a pretty boy, which I also like in a male. Just loved the balance, length and finish of his head, with the raised brows and soft expression. Arched neck into well laid shoulders. Good legs and feet. Deep in rib, well back, strong wide quarters, moved well

2. CHASE CINAMMON'S NJK [ATC AR00923NLD] (MISS A L M OEI)

Liked this young dog also. Good length, balance and finish to head, dark eye, but lost out in expression to winner. Strong arched neck into well laid shoulder, strong legs and very good feet. Well ribbed, slightly longer cast, wide quarters. Dark coat in good order. Moved with drive and style.

3. CASKEYS MAESTRO ( Mr R, Mrs C & Miss F. Heron )

Pleasing type of dog with a good head and dark eye. Deep ribs, straight front, steady mover. Not in his best coat.

Undergraduate - Dog  (Entries: 12 Abs: 0)

1. STARATLANTA ELLIOTT (MISS M & MISS S ANTHONY & TUPPER)

Just out of Junior and unplaced in strong Yearling class. Pleasing head with raised brows, good finish and dark eye. Ribs deep and well back. Good angles fore & aft. Moved OK. Not in best coat and condition at present.

2. MELDOR-SETT MIGHTY GAEL [ATC AQ02072POL] (MRS R OLSZEWSKA)

Dark coated dog with a good balanced head and dark expressive eye. Good body properties and moved well.

3. KERRYDOWN NIGHT HAWK (MRS G R PARTRIDGE)

Another pleasing head on this young dog. Good ribs, firm topline and firm hindquarters. In good coat and condition.

Graduate - Dog  (Entries: 18 Abs: 1)

1. GWENDARIFF THE PINK PANTHER (MRS S E EDWARDS)

Firm bodied dog in good coat of dark colour, well groomed and presented. Pleasing in head with dark eye, good legs and feet. Deep bodied, good hind angulation, moved well holding his topline.

2. FAIRHAVEN QUANTUM SATIS [ATC AS00022SWE] (MISS A RYABIKH)

Pretty headed dog, kind eye and soft expression. Well balanced with no exaggeration. In good coat and moved well with firm topline.

3. SUTERESETT REBEL ROUSER IN BALBRIGGAN (MR J & MRS S CUDDY)

Dark coated dog. Pleasing in head with dark eye, good nose. Well balanced body properties, good legs, firm topline. Moved well.

Post Graduate - Dog  (Entries: 17 Abs: 1)

1. BARDONHILL MOON RIVER FLOWS INTO GLENLAINE JW (MR A & MRS E GRATTON)

Liked the balance of his head, dark eye and expression. Well coated, straight front, deep ribs, good legs and feet. Good tail action on the move.

2. WYNJILL WELL I AM JW (MRS JE HOLLEY)

Close up. Another pleasing balanced head and expression. Nicely angled fore & aft. Good legs and feet. Coat of good colour. Steady mover.

3. CORDARRAGH VAN GOGH (MRS FARNDELL)

Not a big dog with pretty head and dark eye. Good legs and feet. Clean neck and shoulder. Moved well and in good coat, but not the body and condition today.

2. THENDARA SATISFACTION JUN CH (MRS A & MR W, MRS D & MR J LAUWERS, MILLIGAN-BOTT )

Dark coated dog with good length and balance to head. Dark eye with kind expression. Strong arched neck, would prefer more front angulation. Deep ribs, good width to quarters, moved well.

3. CLONAGEERA KINROSS LOVE BAROLO (IMP USA) (MRS P RUTHERFORD)

Lighter coated dog but of good texture and condition. Deep in rib and well back. Stands on good legs and feet. Nicely angulated shoulder into firm topline. A little wide between the eyes, but still a pleasing head and expression. Liked his free reaching movement.

Limit - Dog  (Entries: 18 Abs: 2)

1. THENDARA JOE LE TAXI FOR STOURFORD JW (MR W & MRS A NEEDS)

Shorter coupled dog in good coat. Pleasing head with kind eye. Moderate from all angles, neat feet. A dog I have placed highly in the past and was disappointed that he did not move as freely as I have seen him. Still worthy of his place.

2. CORDARRAGH REMBRANDT (MRS FARNDELL)

Pretty headed dog of good length, balanced with dark eye. Deep ribs, slightly longer cast. Strong arched neck into shoulder. Nicely angulated front, firm topline to well set tail. In good coat, moved with enthusiasm.

3. KIRKAVAGH HERNANDO SHCM (MRS L A RICHARDSON)

Another pleasing dog in this good class. Good length and balance to head, dark expressive eye. Strong arched neck, straight front, good legs and feet. Deep ribs, well back. Strong wide quarters. In good coat, moved well.

Open - Dog  (Entries: 23 Abs: 1)

1. SH CH THENDARA POT NOODLE JW (MRS D & MR J N MILLIGAN-BOTT & BOTT)

This is the dog they all had to look up to today: on form and on fire. He didn’t put a foot wrong. Liked his head for length, balance and finish, dark eye with kind expression. Strong arched neck of desired length, fitting into clean shoulder and firm topline. Deep well ribbed, good legs and feet, strong wide quarters. In super coat and condition, immaculately presented. Pulled everything out on the move and used his tail. CC BOB in agreement with my co-judge. Looked even better in the group being shortlisted.

2. SH CH GWENDARIFF WHIPPERSNAPPER JW (MR A & MISS D STEWART & RITCHIE-SMITH)

3. SH CH SUTERESETT MILKY WAY WITH SCARLETTI JW (MRS T, MISS G & MRS R GISBY & PIKE)

Second and third places could so easily have changed here. Second, the young pretender with time in his favour. Third, been there done that, and looking better than ever with maturity. Both in good coat and condition and going very well and worthy of their titles.
