Judges Report.

Bath CH.SH. May 2016

My Thanks to Bath Championship show for inviting me to judge Irish Setters. I was made most welcome on arrival and would say This show ground is in my opinion the best venue this country has to offer the bowling green rings are excellent as is the tenting & layout the best for exhibitors, dogs and officials; But,

As a past exhibitor and having won Best of Breed here in a large entry and had the disappointment of missing the group, and as the judge who had drawn the second highest entry of over 200at this years show, I know I am not alone in wondering why judging could not be brought forward an hour. Knowing the time restraints on my task and in order to afford every exhibit from MPD to BOB an equal unrushed opportunity, apart from a 10-minuet loo break I did not stop all day

Huge thanks to my stewards Stan & Penny who were amazing their help and support in keeping the ring ticking effortlessly was more than I could have hoped for.

Finally may I thank all for giving me this large quality entry of Irish.

I was very happy with all of my winners and in most cases decisions were close down the line!

So ok…what was I looking for? Excellent condition of body and coat, type & quality, racy outline with a beautiful head but firstly it had to be a well constructed dog that could move with reach and drive, fully extending itself over the ground keeping a raised head and strong top line with a well carried wagging tail, an animated racy outline, with tidy & true footfall.

What did I find? As is usual not many benefitting from all attributes but sadly I found unexpected issues with mouths, incorrect bites, uneven dirty teeth, kinked tails and untidy loose eye rims!

Dogs that may of interested me standing often did little to impress moving, sometimes this may have been due to handling, or maybe the amount of dogs in soft condition lacking any kind of muscle tone anywhere, which I find in a large active breed is unforgivable, or maybe contributing factors such as to many short elements to the basic construction, upright shoulders, level top lines etc., etc.,

It shouldn’t be a trade off between basic correct conformation in favour of pretty faces, of course we want it all but it should be remembered that if a dog is made right it will move right and no dog can move on its head!

. I was pleased my BOB just made the group and was shortlisted, demonstrating well, ideal strong & true driving movement to match the best the gundog group has to offer.

MPD.Bailey & Condron Covarney Lil Rascal Well grown, good profile head shape, plenty of bone, good depth & quarters. Moved ok.

2.DUFRAT LYNWOOD LOVE POTION For Haverley just 6 months, attractive head of good length, narrow in front a little reluctant moving but only just 6 mnths.

PD. 1. Stocktons Gwendariff d’ya think im fab for Kespas. Liked this quality boy very much, he has a good head shape with lovely expression, very balanced and racy in outline, nice width across the croup, presented in gleaming coat, hard condition & moved well. BPIB

2. Cox, Tiroen too darn hot. Presented well in good condition, elegant in outline good quarters but not the front construction of above.

JD.   A good class with some promising young dogs moving very well.

1.Corless. Swiftlark first Knight. Dark coated, correct & beautiful head racy outline sloping top line, excellent angles to shoulder & quarters, moved really well, needs more body weight which I forgave in light of his age.

2. Sharman Kerrimere Indiscreet. So close up liked him very much beautiful head and dark eye, great outline with balanced confirmation, moved well.

3.Rose- Hay. Cataluna Maybe Baby.

YD. Another nice class with plenty of quality around.

1.Edwards. Gwendarif PS I Love you Bonhomie JW. This exhibitor handles and presents all her dogs to perfection and those new to the breed could learn from watching her gentle, unobtrusive style, she makes sure the dog is presented & moved to the requirements of the judge correctly. All of her dogs were presented to me in beautiful coat & hard muscular condition.

I liked the outline of this boy with his excellent balance, good shape to head nice length of neck, sloping top line, good angulation to front & rear moved very well.

2.Bell & Barker-Bell Balintyne Just for You, another beautiful boy presented in good coat & condition, He scored over 1 with his beautiful head & expression, not cooperating much standing but came into his own on the move with good tail action.

3.Gwendariff unknown solider JW Liked this boy standing but today not moving with the verve I would have liked.

ND. Swiftlark First Knight

2.Kerrimere Indiscreet

3. Gwendarif do ya think im fab for kespas

GD. A mixed class but lots to like in most.

1.Savage. Tagamogo Great Gatsby, The least mature but his quality and typy outline with good angulation, to his front and nice sweep to stifle, lovely long head with plenty of work in it, he move so well with lovely tail action.

2.Willis Thyme Bomb at Jacwillins JW. Larger boy with more maturity, presented in lovely coat & condition stands over the ground well standing I thought he would win and although he moved well I liked the scope on the move of 1.

3.Kniveton. Hot Sensation Orstone Cowboy (imp) JW

PGD. Huge class liked all those placed very much.

1.Tuppers. Staratlanta Eliott. Top quality dog presented in fabulous dark coat with plenty of feathering, head is as good as you could wish for, great shape and expression, outline is all setter he flows from head to tail, unbroken top line, great angulation and depth of chest. Stylish driving movement, easily covering the ground. Came very close for top honours!

2.Rose-hay. Applegrove Wallander with Cataluna (imp) so close, love his head and expression and his racy outline, most of the same remarks above apply, moves like a train, coat finish just let him down today.

3.Macaulay. Caskeys Mischief of Stylersetts JW. Hold this boy in high esteem love his type, head & outline, moved well but not the drive of above.

LD. Another huge class where some painstaking decisions had to be made.

Again loads to admire in all those placed.

1. Rutherfords. Clonageera Kinross Love Barolo (imp) This boy was presented & handled to perfection, he’s caught my eye from the ringside before and it was good to feel his excellent body properties for myself. He excels in outline, he is strong without coarseness, flows easily from his well shaped head to his tail great front construction with correct depth and shoulder placement, ribs well sprung, firm through the loin rear quarters, good width across the croup and well bent stifles, in the best hard muscular condition, correct tail set. Comes into his own moving, he carries himself really well great reach and drive, style and typical Irish Setter animation, he never tired put in a great performance every time, moving was exactly what Id hoped to see. CC & BOB. I learnt later this was his crowning CC. Congratulations.

2. Farndell. Cordarragh Rembrandt. I have judged this stunning boy before and he won the res.CC. When I saw him standing in the class I thought he’d be my winner, he has a classic outline, every part of him fits in total harmony. He has a beautiful shaped head with adorable expression, raised brows, dark eyes; I’m unashamed to say it was like looking at his fabulous sire. He stands over his ground and owns it, presented in excellent hard muscular condition with a beautiful dark coat. He moved so well his handler pulling out all the stops to present him at his best. He was the boy I could of taken home, it was hair-splitting but felt the stamina of 1 on the move just had the edge over him.

3. Sturrocks. Forfarrian I’m Sexy and I know it. JW admired the outline of this boy, I liked his style & type, beautiful Head, lacks the maturity of body and movement of above at his time.

1.Cox. JSY.CH.Tiroen too hot to Handle a mature dog presented in fabulous coat and condition, commanding outline he flows through the hand with good balance and angulation, great sweeping quarters, is well up for size but moves freely with great extension and drive using his tail well.

2. Crocker. Coppers War of the Roses. This boy has probably one of the best heads and expressions I judged all day, its beautiful, soft and melting in expression and perfectly balanced. He was presented to perfection in lovely coat. I really like him stood everything flows he is typical and very Irish. However He couldn’t match 1 on the move, and appeared to me to be unlevel in hind movement favouring intermittently one leg.

3.Quinn. Cataluna Peter Pan.

1.Edwards.Gwendariff Rockin Robin JW. I have admired & competed against this boy for years, he’s been a great ambassador for our breed and I think the best produced from this kennel. Today at 9 years old with a gently greying beautiful face he gave me goosebumps, he’s in excellent condition and needs no allowances making for age, presented to perfection. He is so balanced and stands well over his true front on good straight limbs, his sloping top line travels well through good ribs and loin, wide and strong over the croup with well let down stifle, short hocks. He moves so well with reach and drive using his tail to complete the picture of harmony. He could have easily still out-moved most dogs half his age and was unlucky to meet the limit winner on such form. Res.CC & BV

2. Pullen Brinara back for good. 7 ½ years, lovely head with soft expression, nicely balanced with good angles. Moved ok.

3.Rorke.Cataluna Pole Position

MPB. A really lovely class of baby girls, there was so much to like with everyone of them and they all moved so steadily and I’m sure will enjoy good competition throughout their careers.1. Condrons. Covarney Lil minx. Very promising so well put together great angles, liked her substance and overall shape.

2.Watts.Shenanagin Sweet Sixteen preferred the head on this one slightly more upstanding it was a close call.

3. Mugfords Lynwood isn’t she lovely

1.Shenanagin Sweet Sixteen (2nd in MPB)

2. Drinkwater. Brabrook Sassy Pants. Close up to 1, pretty little girl more compact than 1, balanced outline, nice substance moved really well.

3.Lynwood isn’t she lovely

JB. This was a really nice class I liked so much with all of those placed, my first three excelled in quality style and movement.

1. Russell. Melmara Georgia. On first inspection I didn’t think she would be the winner but she moves up a notch on the move, has great ground covering stride with super tail action. She has a nice head, very elegant through the neck and top line.

2. Holley. Wynjill Love Heart. Preferred the lovely expression on this typy girl and how she looks standing, great top line and nicely balanced, not quite the drive and verve moving.

3. Pike Glenrury Lady of the Lake. Very close up.

YB. Bell&Barker-Bell. Balintyne say you Say Me. Headed a quality class. Superb in outline, good head, great in angulation to shoulders and quarters, straight front good depth, excels moving great reach and drive for one so young covering the ground with plenty of verve with ease.

2.Longbottom. Gwendariff will remember u JW. Pretty lighter framed girl upstanding in outline moved well.

3Ciechonska. Aoibheannes Say No More

NB. 1.Melmar Georgia

2. Glenrury Lady of The Lake.

GB, Litter sisters headed this class, lots to like about, pretty expressions good shaped heads, racy outlines, correct toplines, and good angles to shoulder and stifle. 1 scored in depth and sternum and had the slight edge on movement with a little more scope and impressed me enough to consider in the challenge.

1Watertons. Sandstream Summer Breeze

2.Watertons.Sandstream Welcome Breeze

3.Partridge. Kerrydown Octavia

All those who made the cut judging, especially impressed big class that I thoroughly enjoyed. And hair-splitting choices were made.

1.Gilberts. Joanmas Perfect Lullaby. This beautiful girl commands attention, striking racy outline, in gleaming coat and excellent condition, from her beautiful head with melting expression she flows through a great reach of neck down her sloping top line, excellent angulation, depth well sprung ribs going well back, firm loin wide quarters looks good when viewed over the back and in profile. She brings all of her attributes alive on the move covering the ground with style, verve and great extension. CC, her 1st, Congratulations.

So much to like about the next two girls, 1 is taller more upstanding in outline, 3 is slightly longer, both are extremely pretty and moved so well all pushed one another all the way.

2.Powis. Amberwave Feather JW.

3.Gisby. SuttersetOnce Upon a Dream

LB. Another enjoyable huge class with top quality girls.

1.Sturrocks. Forfarian Hey Sexy Lady JW. Handled and presented so well and impressed me greatly; liked her racy outline & style, beautiful head & expression, good substance. Her angulation is spot on, liked her depth & forchest, stands well over her ground. Moved with style and attitude head up using her tail. Competed hard, decision was hairsplitting. Res.CC

2.Anthony. Staratlanta Fire Queen JW. Loved this girl too, beautiful girl from any angle so well made like her size and her driving movement, today was a little out of coat.

3.Bayne. Corranroo Rainbow Kisses

OB, a mixed class for type but all of these girls had quality and lovely heads with true soft expressions.

1.Lippett. SHCH.Neathamill Isabella at Clonageera. Larger set with striking outline, the most beautiful head with plenty of work to it, in lovely coat and condition, moved very well using her tail.

2.Holleys.Wynjill well Known JW. Liked this lady stood very much nice size and balance flowing outline, beautiful head, not as tidy on the move as 1.

Broadgate. Riverman Beat The Boys. Made a lovely trio.

1. Hillocks. Jonola Love & Liberty. Beautiful girl with gorgeous head and expression from expressive soft brown eyes. All quality, rangy in outline with big angles, great depth, super width to quarters. Moved really well, driving off short hocks.

2. Waterton. SHCH.Lynwood kissed by an Angel at Sandstream JW. Slighty lighter frame but same type of rangy outline moved well and was close up.

3. Walsh SHCH.Millcroft Ballard of the Moon.JW. Lovely girl more compact than those above just dropped her top line a tad on the move.
