Critique -  Judge: Mrs Lesley Armstrong-Rodgers (Scottsway

I would first like to thank the Society for inviting me to judge at this lovely show, which, I believe, has a venue to equal any. Today we were gifted with perfect weather, sunny with a slight breeze, great for both exhibitors and dogs alike. Secondly a big thank you to my two stewards, Messrs. Collier & Simpson, for their assistance in keeping the ring running so smoothly.
Last, but certainly not least, to all exhibitors for giving me the opportunity to go over their dogs. I was delighted with my overall winners, presentation was mostly good, but in some cases, well presented dogs were let down by poor movement due to lack of muscle. A setter should always be well muscled, moving free and easy. Unfortunately in some cases this was not so

1st. Greenan’s Anlory Aidan. What a charmer this now nearing 9 months old baby is. Possessing a masculine head, yet not at all coarse, super expression with a kind dark eye and raised brow. Good front and well off for bone. Ample rear quarters. Correct tail set. Shown in lovely dark coat of good quality. Moved really soundly for such a baby. I was pleased to award him Best Puppy Dog and later Best Puppy In Breed.

2nd. Wall’s Hazelbeck Ghillie. Another well bodied puppy with good bone and substance, and having a nice outline. Today movement was a little erratic, but improved once settled. Preferred the head and eye of my winner.

3rd. Shepherd’s Casachared Michaelson Jnr.

PUPPY DOG ( 3,0 )
1st. Greenan’s Anlory Aidan.
2nd. Wall’s Hazelbeck Ghillie.
3rd. Shepherd’s Casachared Michaelson Jnr

JUNIOR DOG  ( 8,3 )
1st.Williamson and Heron’s Caskeys Solar Eclipse At Bluesprings. Eye-catching young dog of really good type. Looks so balanced in profile. Owns the most appealing of heads, with expressive dark eye and  raised brow, low earset and good finish to muzzle. Well ribbed and ample bone. Good front angulation and width to hindquarters.  Coat of good quality, if slightly lighter in colour. Moved out well to win this class over another very nice young dog.

2nd. Northend’s Aoibheanne’s Single Malt. Nice size and type of dog with a lovely head and soft expression. Standing in profile he looks a balanced picture with gentle sloping topline. All finished with correct tailset and shown in nice coat. Moved steadily and true.

3rd. Wheeldon’s Bardonhill Jealous Guy For Colemist.

 YEARLING DOG  ( 3,0 )
1st. Longbottom and Stewart-Ritchie’s Gwendariff Unknown Soldier JW. A really handsome young man He looks lovely standing, so full of breed type. Owns a beautiful head with that oh so soft appealing expression. Good reach of neck into correct shoulder placement. Really deep in chest and excellent rear quarters All finished off with such a lovely dark profuse coat. Moved true and free.

2nd. Naylor and Morrison’s Romarne Clarke Gable Joins Anlory JW. I found this young dog very pleasing to go over, standing he has no lumps and bumps and flows from head to tail. Possesses a handsome head. Good angulation both front and rear. Presented in good coat and condition and lovely free movement, but he was just lacking the maturity of my winner today.

3rd.Glasper’s Esbrown Lord Of The Dance At Denetop.

1st. Kniveton’s Hot Sensation’s Orstone Cowboy ( IMP SWE ) JW. Quality male shown today in fabulous coat and condition. Possesses a good head with such a kindly expression, dark eye, which if wanting to be really critical, could be a little tighter. Lovely finish to muzzle. Correct forequarters. Straight front and well boned. Ample depth to chest and well barrelled rib. Good bend of stifle, which he used to advantage on the move. A nice sight to see on this young dog was the added lashing tail action.

2nd. Rowbottom’s Lanstara Spring Moon. On first appraisal I thought this boy would have been my winner. Owns a really handsome head and a typical  Irish expression. Arched neck into well placed shoulder, good rib and ample rear angulation and correct tail set. Shown in good coat. Moved okay, but just felt he was lacking the important animation and drive seen in my winner on the move today.

3rd. Ogilvie’s Loganrish Potter’s Wheel.

A wonderful class of quality dogs.
1st. Heron’s Caskeys Maestro. How eye catching this dog looked today. Flowing from his handsome head to the tip of his tail. I found the heads on the males placed 1st and 2nd. in this class just what I was looking for in a male. So much work, but not always seen today !, not surprised they are siblings. This dog is well made throughout, arched neck into correctly laid shoulder placement. Good forechest and that all important sternum. Well ribbed up and really strong hindquarters Moved very well in front action and driving from behind. Handled today to get the best from him.

2nd.Macaulay’s Caskeys Mischief Of Stylersetts JW. Lovely topline on this very handsome male. Super head and expression, great body properties, moved out well and shown in excellent bloom. Just felt his little brother moved with more purpose today.

3rd. Limpus’s Karidell Prince Charming.

LIMIT DOG ( 12, 2)
I believe places will change on many occasions with this trio of dogs
1st.   Sturrock’s Forfarrian I’m Sexy An I Know It JW. I have always admired this boy but do not  think I have seen him look better than he did today. Superb outline when standing, so typical of the Irish, with a gentle sloping topline. Owns a beautiful head with such a wonderful expression, rather cheeky, but also so kind, with correct eye shape and colour and good stop with nice finish to muzzle. He has a good front with plenty of bone and flows from his neck into correct shoulder placement. Ample rib and really good width to his well developed rear quarters. Shown in good coat and condition. Movement was so true and so stylish I feel quite sure C.C.’s will come his way. Just had to give way today to the more mature dog, however I was very pleased to award him the Reserve .C.C.

2nd. Cohen’s Caispern Lorenzo with Sushana JW. A quality well made dog who has a masculine head, without any coarseness, that I really found most appealing He has a soft quizzical expression  with correct eye shape and colour with that all important raised brow. Everything in the right place, angulation good fore and aft,  but his handler just needs to watch him when standing as he seems to fidget and then tends to lose his topline slightly, which spoils the topline. Moved out well enough, but at times not at one with his handler today.

3rd. McLarnon’s Gwendariff Nuts Aboutu Glenvarna JW.

OPEN  DOG ( 3,0 )
1st. Stewart and Ritchie Smith’s SH. CH /IR SH. CH. Gwendariff Whippersnapper JW CW’15. I have always admired this dog from a puppy, to awarding him the Reserve C.C. from Yearling when I last judged the breed. With maturity, I think he has just got better and better. His ring presence is so wonderful to see, he seems to be enjoying every minute of being in the ring and you simply cannot ignore his enthusiasm. He commands attention !.  Has a beautiful head with such a very kind eye and quizzical expression, good stop and raised brow. A good reach of neck fitting into well laid back shoulders. Stands on neat feet with excellent bone, with a deep chest and ample rib, strong in loin and great muscled hindquarters. All followed by the best of coats, both in colour and condition. Movement so true, with great forward reach, holding his topline, to the slashing of his bee sting tail and drive from behind. A true Irish I feel. So very pleased to award him the C.C. and later BOB. Well done to his owners and breeder. A rather special dog.

2nd. Hill-Decoster’s Vicarys Keykeeper. A superb head on this male. One of the best I saw today. Has a very firm topline with good neck and shoulders and ample spring of rib. Nice straight front with ample bone, and neat feet. Great depth of chest and good width to second thigh. Shown in nice coat and condition A very nice type of dog who I did consider for the Reserve C.C. but  in the challenge, while his movement was true and he did look good in side gait, I did not feel he had not the drive and enthusiasm of the Limit dog winner.

3rd. Richardson’s SH. CH. Brabrook Flash Harry At Montgreenan SHCM

MINOR PUPPY BITCH ( 5,1 )A lovely class of baby puppies, all at differing stages.
1st. Naylor and Morrison’s Anlory Ameila. A sweet headed puppy nearing 9 months, has a super outline with good neck and shoulders, ample forechest for a baby. Good bone and rib. Well developed rear quarters which she used, moving extremely well for one so young. Shown in gleaming coat. Best Puppy Bitch. Well done.
2nd. Nicolson’s Gwendariff Rainbow Goddess At Lochindorb. Perhaps this bitch puppy was slightly more mature than my 1st place and also has all the essentials in both head and body, enhanced with a lovely coat, in both colour and texture. Today though, I did not think she could match the sound movement of my winner.
3rd. Watt’s Shenanagin Sweet Sixteen.

1st. Naylor and Morrison’s Anlory Ameila

2nd. Watt’s Shenanagin Sweet Sixteen. I loved the head on this bitch puppy nearing 8 months of age.  I actually preferred her in head to the winners in the minor puppy class, but she did not want to show herself off at all, and unfortunately lost out. She has such an inquisitive look, so typically Irish, with lovely raised brow, appealing eye and nice finish to her muzzle. Stands lovely with ample forechest, correct topline and tailset. Although a little apprehensive today, she still moved well with true action and retaining her topline.

3rd.  Dow’s Shenanagin Stolen Kiss.

1st. Bott’s Bardonhill Ice Ice Icicle. This young lady had such a lovely profile both when standing and moving and really holding her topline when viewed in side gait. She has the prettiest of heads, so very typical from this kennel. Best of neck and shoulders, strong in loin and good width to her quarters. She moved out with tail held correctly and her movement was very sound and true. Shown in lovely coat and condition . Completely fell for her and will watch her progress with interest.

2nd. Hunter and Brown’s Braidmount Lady in Waiting. Lots to like about this young lady who is maturing nicely. Has a kind dark eye, sufficient stop, with nicely finished muzzle. Well ribbed up with strong hindquarters and in good coat and condition. I just preferred the neck and shoulders of the winner, who looked more balanced today.
 3rd Nevitt’s Aoibheanne’s Stay With Me.

1st. Box’s Fernstart Birdsong. A  difficult decision as I found both 1st and 2nd placings delightful.  This bitch was so beautifully put together. Lovely outline with no lumps or bumps, together with a gentle sloping topline as our standard requests. Pretty refined head with dark eye and gentle expression Well off for bone and ample forechest, well bent stifles and correct tailset. Presented in reasonable coat today. She appeared quite mature, given she is only a youngster. I think once she finds her best dress, she could trouble the best. Moved well to win over 2nd. but purely on her maturity today.

2nd. Bott’s Bardonhill Ice Ice Icicle
3rd. Bell and Barker-Bell’s Balintyne Say You Say Me.

In this class some bitches looked lovely standing but unfortunately, movement let them down.

1st. Naylor and Morrison’s Anlory Corbieres JW. Although today not shown in perhaps her best dress, I could not find any reason not to place this beautiful young lady 1st. as she could simply hide nothing !. Has such a pretty head and expression excellent neck and shoulders deep through brisket and good rear angulation with correct tailset. Handled very well to get the best out of her.  Moved true with  good head carriage and driving from behind.

2nd. Blackshaw’s Lanstara Spring Star . A very sound bitch shown in nice coat and condition. She has a good head with lots of work with such a kind expressive eye. Standing, she has a lovely balanced topline, well off for bone and strong through loin and correct set of tail. Moved out steadily and true but could not match the verve of my winner.

3rd. Wilson’s Copper’s Snowqueen ( IMP SWE )

1st. Powis’s Amberwave Feather. How this bitch has matured, she owns a really pretty head with the right amount of a chiseling, and kind expressive eye. Stands over some ground and is very substantial, yet oozes breed type from her correct shoulder to her gentle sloping topline. Excellent angulation both fore and aft. Ample spring of rib and well off for bone. It was her very sound movement, perhaps for me one off the best, that finally won her  the class today, over some really lovely bitches.

2nd. Heather’s Caskeys Movie Star at Sixoaks JW. A stunning head on this lovely lady, so very typical of this kennel. She had everything I was looking for. I liked her size and shape, great depth and forechest. Very firm topline, strong in loin and good rear quarters. Shown in super coat condition. Unfortunate to meet the winner on such good form, as I have not seen this bitch move better.

3rd. Driver’s Caskeys Mystique At Stearnwood.

LIMIT BITCH ( 19,2 )
Wow, best class of the day. Sorry so many good bitches had to go cardless.
1st.  Sturrock’s Forfarian Hey Sexy Lady JW. My star of the day !.  She is just what I was looking for in an Irish, both in size and shape. She has the prettiest of heads with that all important melting expression. Lovely eye and raised brow. She is substantial but so very elegant. Arched neck and  correct shoulder placement, good depth of chest and sternum.  Well ribbed up with a gentle sloping topline. Firm in loin with ample rear angulation and correct tail set. Moved soundly with reach and drive, looking so elegant with her head held high and holding her topline and that tail moving from side to side.  She looked superb when viewed in side gait. Handled sympathetically to get the best from her. It was a pleasure to award her the Bitch C.C. Well done. ( It was later brought to my attention this gave her, her title. Many Congratulations. )

2nd. Harred’s Florrie. Another lady with so much to like. She certainly took my attention on first appraisal. She has a classic head with correct finish to foreface, almond shaped eye and raised brow. Clean neck, fitting correctly into good shoulder placement. Well off for bone and ample chest, excellent rib, followed by strong rear quarters and a good finish over croup. Shown in lovely coat. I do not recall having seen her when watching Irish being shown recently so quite new to me but I thought very highly of her and pleased to award her the Reserve C.C.

3rd. Wheeldon’s Bardonhill Carrie Anne Foe Colemist.

OPEN  BITCH ( 4,0 )
1st. Limpus’s SH. CH. Shennanagin She’s The One For Karidell  JW. A lovely bitch standing, who commands your attention. It is easy to see why she has her title. So much work in her head with that wonderful eye and raised brow and the right amount of stop. She has excellent bone and substance, good front and very good shoulder placement, ample spring of rib with a really strong topline. All followed by really well muscled hind quarters. Wonderful coat, both in colour and condition. Moved out steadily and true. It was an honour to go over her.

2nd. Bott’s Bardonhill Guilty Pleasure. A very pretty bitch with refined head and lovely eye. Arched neck of good length, ample forechest, and  well off for bone. Very good width to second thigh. She has a flowing topline  which she held on the move. Shown today in lovely coat and condition but just felt the winner had more animation on the day.

3rd. Gaffney’s Big Red’s Hey It Wasn’t Me ( IMP NLD ) BW NL’14.

Always lovely to see the Oldies, sometimes showing the youngster’s the way to move too !.
1st. Stephenson’s Drumwhaur Summer Song. A beautiful headed bitch, with a lovely eye and soft expression with good finish to foreface. She still retains a good topline even with her aging years. Looked balanced with good bone and substance. Plenty of lung room and correct tail set. Presented in good coat. Moved out extremely well, to take her place over another lovely Golden Oldie.

2nd. Harvey’s Sametsuz Cover Girl At Barntallock. Such a  pretty head on this bitch of just over eight years young !. Looked really well in profile. She possesses a good forechest and has plenty of bone. Good finish to croup. Her coat looked in good condition for her age. Moved out well enough but not quite as positive as the winner today.
