Critique - Judge: Mr Richard Bott

I would like to thank the committee for the invitation to judge and the exhibitors for their entries. I was pleased with the overall quality of the entry and presentation was good on the whole. There were a number of exhibits who were “surface groomed” and my fingers did get stuck in knots which was a little disappointing. One of my main concerns was a number of incorrect bites. I know that this is only one aspect for consideration when judging, but to me it is the only point within the breed standard which is not up for interpretation, it is very black and white. If we begin to accept that level or reverse scissor bites are “acceptable” then we are setting the future of further problems and when do they then become unacceptable? Another pet hate for me are gay tails, it really does spoil the outline of an Irish when the exhibit is going around the ring “flying the flag”, I understand young dogs may do this as they are feeling their feet but this again is another thing that we should take into consideration.

Disappointingly some exhibitors seemed to have left their “sportsmanship” at home and various comments were made around the ring. What has happened to the fun side of showing where we encouraged new people into the breed, not the vicious verbal attacks that I have heard about recently. This is very saddening indeed and far removed from the encouraging atmosphere I encountered when I began showing dogs.

The ring size was good, however a number of dogs found it a little slippy to stand on the carpet and I did take this into account.

Class 1806 VD (1 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 5826 GRIFFIN Mr & Mrs T R & G J Corriebran Diagem

Masculine head and expression with a good shaped eye. Clean neck leading cleanly into shoulders, balanced angulation both ends and a gentle slope to the topline. Well bodied with good spring of rib and firm loin. Profile movement was free and covered the ground.

Class 1807 MPD (2 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: ROFFEY Miss S Gwendariff Lucy's Legacy

A very well schooled young man who put on an impeccable performance. Pleasing in head and eye with a lovely expression, good reach of neck which fitted cleanly into well placed shoulders. Balanced angulation both ends and bodying up nicely. Correct topline and tailset and standing on good legs and feet. He was so together on the move which gave him the edge, he covered the ground with a very flowing and free action for his age, would like a slightly darker coat but plenty of time for this to happen as he matures.

2nd: PARSONS, Mrs & Miss & GISBY Mrs & Miss Suteresett Tom Collins At Bransett

Another lovely young man, such an appealing head and expression, a hint of mischievousness in his eye and a lovely raised brow. Clean through the neck and shoulder and a super return of forearm, depth to his chest and quarters developing well. He did give his handler a bit of a battle but I could assess his movement as accurate and he covered the ground. A cheeky chap who will certainly get there with a little more practice.

Class 1808 PD (3 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: GREENAN Miss J Anlory Aidan

Upstanding and impressive young man, all male throughout but maintaining the raciness required. Masculine head of good proportions and with a lovely eye and expression. Good reach of neck leading to correct front assembly for his age. Well bodied and ribs well back to a firm loin, quarters strong and with well bent stifles, spot on tailset and in super coat and condition. He moved very well and covered the ground with ease and style, a bright future is in front of him I feel. BPD.

2nd: DANKS-KEMISH Mrs R D Oakdene Ocean Crest Over Alolfrana NAF
Another upstanding dog who again is all male but still at the raw side and needs to fill his frame and come together. Pleasing in head and expression, good neck and balanced angles both ends, correct topline and tailset and stands on good legs and feet. A little erratic on the move today but his sympathetic hander got the best from him.

Class 1809 JD (11 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: LORRIMER Mrs J M Kerrimere Charismatic

This dog surprised me and really appealed. So well put together and he just flows, lovely head of correct proportions, raised brow and a melting expression. Super reach of neck and good front angulation, with correct depth to forechest and ribs sprung and well back. Lovely gentle slope to his topline and well set on tail. Well bent stifles and quarters well developed. He is very sound on the move with accurate action fore and aft and he covers the ground with ease. His handler knows how to get the best out of him and they make a super team.

2nd: STOCKTON Mr & Mrs K&P Gwendariff D'ya Think I'm Fab For Kespas

Presents a clean and balanced outline, pleasing in head and expression with a dark eye. Super through the neck and shoulders, developing in body and forechest, good ribs and strong loin, all giving a correct topline. Quarters developing well and showing balance throughout. Moved well in profile, just needs to tighten in front and time to mature.

1st: GRATTON Mr & Mrs A P & E C Bardonhill Snow Wolf With Glenlaine

This dog and handler need to work as one to get the best out of him, I can see he is a handful but with a little more work they will get there. Masculine in head and expression but I would like to see a little more work as he matures. Clean reach of neck and good front assembly, depth to forechest and ribs sprung and well back, length to the loin and developed quarters. He fought his handler a little on the stack but I could see his outline on the move, he covered the ground with ease with reach and drive.

2nd: LONGBOTTOM, Mesdames C R & A & STEWART-RITCHIE D Gwendariff Unknown Soldier JW

Cracking headpiece to this dog, well moulded and with raised brow, topped off with lovely dark eyes and a melting expression. Clean through the neck and over the shoulder, I found him a little straight in front assembly. Good depth to forechest and ribs well sprung and back to a firm loin, a little overdone in rear assembly compared to the front. Presented to perfection and in great condition. He moved out well on the out and back.

Class 1811 GD (5 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: NAYLOR, Mr N & MORRISON, Miss J & GREENAN Miss J Anlory Keltic Blue Sky

This boy stood out in the class on the firm move around the ring, so free flowing and such ground covering action. Masculine head with good work, raised brow and a melting expression. Lovely reach of neck leading to well placed shoulders and a good return of forearm. Developed forechest and ribs sprung and well back to a well proportioned loin, which was firm and meant he maintained his topline throughout. Quarters strong and developed with correct rear angulation. He stands on good legs and feet. He impressed on the initial move and on the out and back he is accurate and correct. He just needs a little more coat to finish the picture.

2nd: HOSKINS Miss B Sandstream Just A Breeze

Presents a pleasing picture, masculine in head although a little plainer than 1. Good reach of neck and well placed shoulders, a shade short in upper arm. Good forechest and spring of rib leading to a strong loin of good proportions. Developed quarters and good bend of stile, topline held throughout. Well presented and in good condition, he moved accurately but needs a little more animation to get the best out of him.

1st: WILLIS Mr W & Mrs J Gwendariff Thyme Bomb At Jacwilins JW

This boy looked superb today, his presentation and condition should be looked at by those wishing to learn. He presents a typical and clean outline, masculine in head and expression and has just enough work. Super reach of neck and very nice front assembly, good forechest and ribs sprung and well back to a firm and strong loin. Lovely topline, tailset and finish to the croup. Quarters strong and good development of second thigh. A very nice dog who was put down to perfection, on the move he covered the ground with ease and had accurate footfall, top honours are not far away as he pushed hard for the rcc.

2nd: MUIR Mrs L Romarne Taittinger JW

Another who presents a very clean and balanced outline, masculine head, with good work and a raised brow, a shade round in eye but his did not detract. Clean strong neck and well placed shoulders, good return of forearm and depth to forechest. Ribs sprung and well back to a firm and proportionate loin, correct gentle slope to the topline and good finish to the croup. Quarters developed with correct bend of stifle, moved very well in profile with reach and drive appearing effortless. On the out and back he was not as tidy behind as 1 and did not have the finish, nevertheless a very nice young dog.

So typical in outline, he flows from head to toe. Lovely head piece with the right amount of work, well proportioned and a melting expression. Strong clean neck which flows into well placed shoulders, good return to forearm and developed forechest. Straight front and stands on good legs and feet. Ribs sprung and well back to a firm and balanced loin, super quarters and development of second thigh. He held his topline throughout and in profile movement he flowed, covering the ground with ease and style. He is at one with his handler and they have a super rapport. No hesitation in awarding him the RCC.

2nd: GRATTON Mr & Mrs A P & E C Bardonhill Moon River Flows Into Glenlaine JW

I have often seen this dog with a different handler and he always looked a decent dog. Today he had a different handler who really pulled the stops out and presented him with a super outline and moved him correctly. Masculine head piece which is well proportioned and melting in expression, not quite as much work as 1 but this did not detract. Good reach of neck leading to a good front assembly, depth to forechest and ribs sprung and well back. Loin firm which meant his topline never faltered and good finish to the croup, super quarters and bend of stifle. Moved with style and covering the ground with ease. Just needs a little more work on his coat. Dog and handler make a great team.

1st: CROCKER, Mr B A & SIDDLE Miss A C Sh Ch Copper's War Of Roses

It was no secret that I awarded this dog group 2 at Blackpool this year but I came today with an open mind and judged as I saw them on the day. Today he excelled his performance earlier in the year. His head is so correct, it is well proportioned, correct amount of work and chiselling. He has raised brows that twitch as you look at him and an expression that is not only melting but has that look of mischievousness, which is so Irish.   His low set ears frame his head beautifully, he is clean in neck and this flows into well placed shoulders, a good return of forearm and a developed forechest. He is straight in front and stands on good legs and feet. His topline flows from his withers through to the tip of his tail. Required bend of stifle and in cracking condition with developed first and second thigh. He presented a fabulous picture that filled the eye and was put down to perfection in muscle tone and fitness . His handler moved him beautifully on the out and back, which meant he had accurate footfall and a precise action, in profile he just flowed and held his outline, covering the ground with an easy stride, combining style and power. His coat was gleaming and his presentation was spot on.   I had no hesitation in awarding him the CC and BOB, a super example of the breed.

2nd: OEI Ms A L M NL Ch Chase Cinammon's

I judged this dog earlier in the year in Holland and awarded him BIS, my opinion has not changed and still feel he is a cracking example of the breed. Today, however he was not in the coat and condition he was in earlier in the year. Typical head piece, with super expression, work and using those raised browns. Good reach of neck, leading to a very well constructed front assembly. Depth to forechest and ribs sprung and well back, loin firm but a shade long. Good finish to the croup and well set tail. Lovely developed quarters and bend of stifle which were used to advantage on the move. In profile he covered the ground well and with a free action, he wasn’t quite as tidy behind today as he appeared to be slipping a little on the carpet.

Old favourite who looked really well today. Most feminine of heads and expressions, with a raised brow and lovely dark eye. Clean in outline and balanced throughout. Good through the neck and shoulders and holding her topline well. Balanced angulation and good body properties. In good condition and she moved with a lashing tail and steady gait. Best Veteran.

1st: NAYLOR, Mr & MORRISON Miss Anlory Carmine

I thought this young lady was exquisite, she has the most beautiful head and expression, raised brow and a hint of mischievousness in her eye, low set ears. Good crest to her neck, which flowed beautifully into well placed shoulders. Front angulation as you would wish at this age and super body proportions. Her topline has a gentle slope and cracking finish to her croup. Well bent stifles and already developing well for muscle tone. She stands on super legs and feet and is presented in fine form and in beautiful condition. Very pleased to award her Best Puppy.

2nd: GISBY Mrs & Miss T & G Suteresett Pina Colada

Another super youngster which has many of the same attributes as Carmine. Sweetest of heads with a melting expression. So clean and balanced in outline, she flows from her well arched neck through to the tip of her tail. Super front assembly and return of forearm, bodying up well and quarters as you would want at 6 months. Again well reared and with good bone and substance, I’m sure she will have a bright future. Liked her a lot but she wasn’t as together on the move as 1.

Another very promising young lady which can only bode well for the breed. Beautifully headed, correct proportions, raised brows and lovely eyes that show her real character. Clean reach of neck which leads to well laid shoulders, required return of forearm, chest developing well and straight when viewed from the front. Bodying up well and with a correct topline, good quarters and enough bend of stifle. She is sound and accurate on the move and just needs to tighten a little.

2nd: DANKS-KEMISH Miss O P Rappaty Star Light Over Alolfrana

Feminine in head with a lovely dark eye and the kindest of expressions. Very clean through the neck and shoulders, balanced angles fore and aft but just a little straight at the moment. Ribs well back and she just needs time to fill her frame and mature. Very sound and true on the move and handled to perfection to pace her correctly.

Feminine with substance, presents a balanced picture and a clean outline. Beautiful head and eye, good neck leading to well placed shoulders and good return of forearm. Carrying a little too much weight over the shoulder today which cost her in the second class. Good depth to forechest and ribs sprung and well back to a firm loin. Good topline and finish to the croup and her quarters are developed and used to advantage. Accurate in footfall and covered the ground with ease and style.

2nd: CHORLEY-NEWTON, Mrs S E & CHORLEY Miss K Bardonhill Endless Love To Kerryfair

This bitch is so honest and sound, not the most flashy of girls but oozes type and quality. Most feminine of head with the right amount of work and a hint of mischievousness from her lovely dark eyes and raised brow. Clean neck leading to good front assembly, good forechest and sternum, ribs sprung and well back to a firm loin. Super outline and finish to the croup and developed quarters with good bend of stifle. True mover who covered the ground well, handler just needs to step up a gear to get into full flow.

Just loved her, so elegant and stylish with correct amount of substance, raciness and style. Head and expression just melt you, she has a cheeky hint in her eye and you know she is a real show girl. She flows from nose to tail and is so well balanced throughout. Best of front assemblies with super ribs and a strong and proportionate loin. Stifles are well bent and she has development of first and second thigh which was spot on. On the move she does not put a foot wrong, so accurate in footfall she is true on the out and back and in profile she is a joy to watch. Really pushed hard for the CC but just lacked a little maturity to the open winner, therefore I awarded her the RCC without a hint of hesitation.

2nd: ROFFEY Miss S Araki Coz I'm Happy

Another bitch who pleased for her substance yet maintaining her femininity. Well proportioned head with a soft and gentle expression coming from dark well shaped eyes. Clean through the neck and shoulder, good depth to forechest and ribs sprung and well back to a firm loin. Super quarters which were firm and well developed. She is very stylish and elegant on the move and covers the ground with little effort indeed, schooled to perfection and put on a great performance.

Good front assembly and depth to her forechest, ribs sprung and well back to a firm and proportionate loin. Correct finish to the croup and well set tail. Quarters strong and developed. She moved covering the ground with ease and a flowing action, loved her character, true Irish and a little bit naughty.

2nd: WATT Mr J A Shenanagin Scrumptious

Lovely type of bitch with a slightly stronger head than 1 but still feminine and super expression. Clean neck and well placed shoulders, I liked her depth of forechest and her ribs were sprung and well back. Topline has a gentle slope and super finish to the croup. In such hard condition, her quarters were developed with a good second thigh and short hock to heel. She is very sound on the move and covers the ground, I would just like her moved at a slightly faster pace to see her in full flow.

This bitch did not make life easy for her handler today, she certainly has the Irish spirit and character which I do like to see. Her head appealed very much that characteristic expression and raised brow to top it off. Good reach of neck and very well constructed front assembly. Ribs sprung and well back to a well proportioned loin. Topline has gentle slope and remained firm throughout. Very well developed quarters and second thigh. She covered the ground with style and ease and yet you knew at anytime she was about to pounce, certainly one who enjoys her day out.

2nd: MORRISS-BEGG Mrs S A Thendara Chasing Boys To Sumaric

Very appealing in outline and balance. Pleasing in head with a feminine expression and enough work. Well placed shoulders and good depth of forechest. Good substance throughout without being overdone, ribs sprung and well back. Good bend of stifle and short from hock to heel. Her handler really got her going and she covered the ground well. Just wish she was in harder condition as this affected her topline on the move and not the strength behind as D’Lite.

This bitch is so well balanced and all in proportion, she has style, elegance and the right amount of substance. Feminine in head with the right amount of work and chiselling, beautiful eyes and raised brows giving that typical expression. She flows through the neck and shoulders, which are well laid back and she has the correct length of forearm. She is well bodied with a pronounced forechest, ribs which are well sprung and back to a firm and powerful loin. Her tailset and finish of the croup are spot on. On the move she has a ground covering action, head carried high and the attitude that says “are you watching me?” A very nice bitch who I had no hesitation in awarding the CC.

2nd: LIMPUS Mr & Mrs B & N Sh Ch Shenanagin She's The One For Karidell JW

Another bitch that I have often admired whilst competing against her. For my personal taste there is a tad too much of her for me but she maintains her femininity and elegance. Good bend of stifle and correct finish to croup. Moved very true on the out and back and had a free ground covering action.
