Critque - Judge: Mrs Jackie Willis

Thank you to the committee for the invitation and to my two stewards who were both friendly and efficient in the execution of their duties.

The weather had a terrible effect on the showground as a whole and I know how hard the committee worked to make the ground as accessible as possible. We were lucky with the Irish Setter ring in that we had two rings combined so could stay undercover and still had a reasonable amount of space. I know how hard everyone works in presenting their dogs to the highest levels, and to maintain this with so much mud to contend with was a credit to everyone.

It’s been 5 years since I’ve judged in the UK and I was thrilled with such a quality entry. In my opinion the breed has some beautiful dogs and bitches throughout the age/class groups which bodes well for the future of the breed. I was spoilt for choice in many classes and some dogs I admire went card less today. I was hair splitting on many occasions.

The amount of work that is put into an exhibit to put it down in the highest order comes in many forms. Exercise in both free running and road walking, plus ‘playtime’ is such an important part in both the dog’s performance and condition. For me this can make quite a difference when you are making final decisions on placings.

Minor Puppy Dog (4,0)

1. Holley – Wynjill Snap Dragon – 6 months’ stylish baby who really made an impact. Exquisite head with lovely work, raised brow and low ear set. Flowed from head to tail. Quality bone, straight front. Gave his handler quite a struggle when being stacked but boy could this baby move. His reach and drive was wonderful to watch. Nothing put this boy off his stride. This was the best time to assess him and gave him BPIB

2. Hart – Gwendariff In The Limelight with Gilliegrae – Very smart baby who has great balance for one so young. Gleaming condition and sympathetically handled to get the best out of him. Loved his head, sweetest of expressions and correct eye colour. Well set back shoulders and excellent forehand. A little unsettled on the move but conditions were tough and he is only a baby.

3. Naylor and Morrison – Anlory Duncun – Completed a lovely trio

Puppy Dog (3,0)

1. Gisby, Gisby and Parsons – Suteresett King of Hearts – 10 month boy put down in excellent order. Lovely type. Well developed, good front and shoulder placement. Deep chest and quality bone. Masculine, refined head. Quarters starting to drop and good second thigh. Moved well

2. Lorrimer – Kerrimere Classique – Close up to 1. Put down in excellent order and liked his type and style. Loved his head with correct balance and expression. Very well developed quarters that he used well on the move.

3. Hart – Gwendariff In The Limelight with Gilliegrae

Junior Dog (5,0)

Some lovely youngsters

1. Stockton – Riverbrue Alchemist Amidst Kespas JW – Absolutely loved this boy for type and style. On the move he has tremendous reach and drive that really draws the eye. Racy outline that flows. Masculine, well balanced head and lovely eye shape and colour. Great angles fore and aft, good finish to croup and presented in great condition.

2. Ostman – Copper’s Riddarsporre – This breeder has a real stamp in her make and shape and this dog is no exception. Racy, full of breed type. Exquisite head with raised brow and quizzical expression. Flowing top line and well developed quarters that he used well on the move.

3. Holley – Wynjill Winner Takes All JW

Yearling (10,2) – Lovely class headed by two smart brothers. Breeder should feel very proud. A lovely dog went lame in this class and had to retire. I hope he recovers soon.

1. Chorley-Newton, Chorley, Flinders – Pawsword Priceless To Kerryfair JW – One I have admired from the ringside and did not disappoint. Fills the eye for breed type. Beautiful head with exquisite expression. Racy, straight front, deep chest, strong through the loin and well developed quarters. Moved with purpose and good footfall and put down in excellent order.

2. Davis – Pawsword Prairie Wind JW – Litter brother to one and similar comments apply. Everything to like. Not as mature as one but I’m sure these two will change places on many occasions. Presented in beautiful condition and handled to advantage.

3. Roffey – Gwendariff Lucy’s Legacy

Post Graduate (13,3)

1. Bott – Gwendariff D’ya Know My Name By Bardonhill JW – This dog stands over plenty of ground and already looks the finished article. It’s hard to believe he has only just turned 2. He is presented in the most wonderful condition and his coat is the richest chestnut colour. His head is masculine without any trace of coarseness with an eye that twinkles as you look at him. He has well laid shoulders and stands on quality bone. Strong through the loin and very well developed quarters and correct second thigh. Correct finish to croup. He moves with purpose, animation and lashing tail.

2. Edwards – Gwendariff PS I Love You Bonhomie JW – Surprised myself with this boy. I haven’t seen him for a while and he is now coming back to the dog I admired as a baby. Upstanding and put down to perfection as you always see from this exhibitor. Pleasing refined head, good finish to foreface and low set ears. Deep chest and strong through the loin. Quarters are well developed and his footfall was sound.

3. Lucas – Bardonhill Eternal Flame Among Amberlight JW

Limit (12,2) – Lovely class where I was spoilt for choice

1. Mitchell – Amblin’s Sweet William – Well, this boy is now really making his mark. His make and shape is beautiful. Nothing is overdone and he has wonderful balance. Put down in excellent condition. Handsome, refined head, straight front, deep chest, good rib, loin, well developed quarters and correct finish to croup completes the picture. For me where this boy has changed is on the move. I had always thought he was a sound mover but needed more animation. He now has it in abundance. Whatever his handler is doing, just keep doing it! He was seriously considered for top honours.

2. Muir – Romarne Tattinger JW – Another surprise to me. Have always quite ‘liked’ him but didn’t think he was for me. However, when you go over this dog he is an excellent specimen of the breed. Beautiful head with sweetest expression, best of fronts and in excellent musculature condition. His movement is a joy to watch. To be hypercritical I think he could be moved at a slightly quicker pace to show him off to his full potential. Would be nice to have more coat to complete the picture but he was very close up to one today and was in front of dogs that I thought would have beaten him under me.

3. Rowbottom – Lanstara Spring Moon – Completed a lovely trio.

Open Dog (8,1) – Star studded. A pleasure and honour to judge

1. Stewart, Ritchie-Smith – Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Whippersnapper JW/CW15 – Last time I judged I gave this boy BPIB and what a journey he is having. Having just turned 6 years old you would think perhaps he would be giving into the youngsters a little, but this boy is having ‘none of it’. His condition in both coat and muscle tone is a joy to the touch and it just enhances the excellent bone structure underneath. He has a soft expression, lovely balance to his head and good finish to foreface. Excellent forehand, spring of rib, loin, and quarters that are strong and powerful. Excellent finish to croup. He is at one with his handler on the move, great footfall and lashing tail. CC, BOB and delighted to watch him take G2. Congratulations!

2. Crocker and Siddle – Sh Ch Copper’s War of Roses – Another dog that has had a star studded career and I’m sure much more to come. He commands your attention as he is stacked and his handler gets 110% out of him. He is racy and full of quality. His head is exquisite, handsome and refined. Like one his muscle condition is top notch and for me this is where these dogs take the competition to another level. Great upper arm angulation and lay of shoulder. Well sprung ribs and well developed quarters that complete the racy outline. He moved soundly and with style. RCC

3. Milligan-Bott, Bott – Sh Ch Thendara Pot Noodle JW – Another beautiful example of the breed.

Good Citizen Dog (2,0)

1. Stockton – Gwendariff D’ya Think I’m Fab for Kespas JW – Lovely type of youngster. Rich, dark coat. Soft expression, dark expressive eye. Racy in outline and carried himself well on the move.

2. Mohan – Anlory Keltic Legend – Handsome boy in good coat condition. Good front and well balanced. Carrying a little too much weight.

Minor Puppy Bitch (4,0)

1. Jones – Gwendariff Chilli Pepper – What a cutie. Just 7 months but very well-schooled and put down in excellent order. Sweetest of heads, quality bone, flowed from top to tail. Very nice on the move. BPB

2. Naylor & Morrison – Anlory Doris – Gave her handler a hard time but didn’t detract from this lovely little girl. Well made, lovely front, sweetest of heads with lovely dark eye. Moved well when settled.

3. Condron – Covarney Lil’pickle

Puppy Bitch (2,0)

1. Henderson – Sametsuz On Reflection (AI) – Both these puppies were enjoying their day out and handlers were having a tough time! Prettiest of girls as expected from this breeder. Good depth and in lovely coat and condition.

2. Sketchley – Kerrimere Misty For Me – Nice balance to this baby and put down in good condition. Pleasing head and straight front. Carrying a bit too much weight.

Junior Bitch (9,1)

1. Ostman – Copper’s Mandelblom – Like her brother in JD this girl is a lovely make and shape. Prettiest of heads, good angles fore and aft. Loved her length and she flowed from tip to tail. Great movement with drive and purpose

2. Tully – Gwendariff Lily The Pink – Close up to 1. Mature girl presented in wonderful coat and condition. Prettiest of heads with good front, depth and strength through loin and quarters. Loved her balance. Moved with style.

3. Muir – Romarne April Showers

Yearling Bitch (15,3) – Very strong class

1. Crocker and Siddle – Riverbrue Gloriana – And glorious she was! I loved everything about her. She had substance but retained elegance and as always from this exhibitor put down in the highest order and gleaming coat. Beautiful head with cheeky Irish expression. Best of front angulation and lay of shoulder, good spring of rib, strong through the loin and well finished off at croup. One of the best movers of the day. On moving her up to stand next to the OB in the challenge she just lacked the maturity to take the CC, but delighted to award her the RCC.

2. Nicholson – Gwendariff Rainbow Goddess At Lochindorb – Bigger bitch all through

though retains her balance and elegance. Pleasing head, good angles fore and aft deep chest and well ribbed, flowing topline. In lovely coat. Moved well

3. Danks-Kemish – Rappatty Star Light Over Alolfrana JW – Completed a lovely trio.

Post-Graduate Bitch (13,4)

1. Chorley-Newton, Chorley, Flinders – Bardonhill Endless Love To Kerryfair – New one to me and just found myself being drawn to her again and again as I walked up and down the class. Exudes femininity and loved her make, shape and balance. Prettiest of heads with sweetest of expressions and kind eye. Good front, neck fits cleaning into shoulders, deep chest and good strength through the loin. Presented in lovely condition. Good footfall and a happy mover.

2. Stevenson – Lochlorien True Detective Is Andley – Bigger bitch all through but lots to like. Well balanced with a pleasing head. Sound in front, deep through the chest and well developed quarters. Moved soundly

3. Naylor & Morrison – Anlory Corbieres JW

Limit Bitch (13,3)

1. Bott – Gwendariff Such A Carry On At Bardonhill JW – This girl is so beautifully feminine. Loved her head with her gorgeous expression. She has plenty of scope that give her a racy outline and she moves with elegance and style. Deep chest, with good spring of rib and great width to her quarters. Presented in gleaming condition.

2. Stevenson – Lochlorien Scully Foxes Andley – Bigger bitch and different in type than one but looked a picture. Rich dark coat in wonderful condition. Feminine head, with raised brow and sweet expression. Straight front, deep chest and lovely lay of shoulder. Well finished croup and well developed quarters. Moved well.

3. Gisby – Suteresett Once Upon A Dream

Open Bitch (6,2)

1. Armitage – Sh Ch Gwendariff Coco Nut Cream – As you would expect this girl is put down in immaculate order and I’ve never seen her in such amazing coat and condition. She possesses the most beautiful head and expression. Straight front, deep chest and well developed through the loin. Strong quarters and well finished over the croup. However, for me what gives her the edge is her presence. On the move her handler is just along for the ride. She powers around the ring with a ‘look at me attitude’ and when she’s stacked she follows you with her devilish Irish eyes. CC

2. Bott, Allen and Morgan – Sh Ch Bardonhill Please Don’t Tease Quensha JW – A girl that always delivers for her handler. Sweetest of heads with the most delightful expression and full of femininity and quality from any angle. So light on her feet and at one with her handler. Not in her best coat that just gave the other two girls the edge today.
