Critique - Judge: Mrs Lynne Morris

Firstly, I would like to congratulate Darlington Dog Show Society on running such a successful show and thank the hard-working committee for all they did to make my day enjoyable. Particular thanks go to my ring stewards for their brilliant organisation which started with them needing to find a replacement for the designated ring which had become waterlogged due to the very unkind weather. I would like to thank all exhibitors for giving me the most memorable day with a super entry both in quality and number. It was an honour to be able to judge this entry.

Decisions were very close in many classes where I would have liked to have awarded more than the one red card. However, movement remains a concern with a significant number of both dogs and bitches lacking reach in front making for a choppy action and lacking drive from the rear. Some exhibits moved so closely behind that their hocks were touching and others were throwing their feet out of line which cost them a place in their class. I was also disappointed to find that heads do not seem to be as good as they once were – with too many lacking stop, refinement and lacking the beautiful quizzical expression that we strive to achieve. Some dogs were very deep in the muzzle with pendulous flews which is more typical of a Gordon. I was also surprised by the number of mouths in the lower and higher classes which were at best untidy and in some cases undershot – I think we need to keep a close watch on this. I was pleased not to find any sign of entropian; temperament was very good with lots of evidence of the affectionate nature of the breed which we love and the majority of dogs were presented in hard condition. I would like to congratulate the exhibitors for presenting their dogs so well and appreciate the hard work and dedication that is needed over time to achieve such high standards.

Dog

Veteran (3,2)

1. Hogarth’s Sh Ch Avacet Snowdrift. A beautifully balanced dark coated dog of the highest quality, presented to perfection in excellent coat and condition. Very good angulation fore and aft with good width across hind quarters, gently sloping topline which he held while moving soundly with good drive. Classic lean handsome head, refined over skull, low set ears, raised brows, dark eye, nicely chiselled features making up a most appealing expression. Best veteran.

Minor Puppy (7,0). A difficult class to assess in that there was a very wide variation in type, size, maturity and training, however I did find some lovely, promising ‘babies’.

1. Holley’s Wynjill Snap Dragon. A lovely racy 6 month old baby. Full of quality, super outline, well-constructed, clean over neck and shoulders, straight in front, good angulation at the shoulder and in rear quarters. Correct tail set. Very refined throughout with a lovely head and expression.

2. Hall’s Harreds Trevor. Another very promising boy. More mature than 1, with very good bone and body properties. Straight front, well sprung ribs and good depth of chest, super thick, dark coat. Appealing masculine head, refined with good length, soft expression. Lacking stop at the moment but I expect this will come back in time.

3. Naylor and Morrison’s Anlory Duncan

Puppy (7,0)

1. Peper’s Glennlokhen Macallan. Well proportioned youngster with a super dark coat, elegant, racy outline and correct tail set. Well-constructed throughout with well angulated shoulders and rear quarters, straight front, neat feet and good depth of body. Refined, handsome, masculine head, dark eye, good finish to muzzle. No exaggerations, moved soundly. Best puppy dog.

2. Lorrimer’s Kerrimere Classique. Another promising, racy puppy with super outline and good angulation front and rear. Well boned, good body properties. Appealing head, nicely chiselled with soft expression. Not so true on the move as 1 today.

3. Cove-Print’s Colourbox Dr Seuss

Junior (7,0)

1. Stockton’s Riverbrue Alchemist Amidst Kespas JW A high quality youngster with all the attributes I hoped to find; very well -presented. Elegant and racy in outline but plenty of substance. Straight front, excellent conformation, clean over neck and shoulders, strong hind quarters which he used to move freely with a positive driving action. Refined, well-proportioned masculine head with dark eye and soft melting expression. A lovely boy.

2. Muir and O’Connor’s Gwendariff I’m Comin Out. A very appealing, handsome, refined boy with a lovely head. Super dark coat, excellent body properties with good depth of chest, well-ribbed back, good bone, clean outline. Correct sloping topline and well-angulated rear quarters. Moved soundly.

3. Holley’s Wynjill Winner Takes All JW

Yearling (7,0)

1. Davis’s Pawsword Prairie Wind JW. Lovely racy type, full of quality. Very well presented with a super dark coat. Well-constructed, good forechest and depth of body, gently sloping topline, powerful rear quarters, flat croup and correct tail set. Moved soundly. Refined, balanced, masculine head with raised brows and a soft expression.

2. Hogarth’s Twoacres Bubbling Spring at Halingswood. An appealing, elegant dark-coated boy built on racy lines with good body properties, straight front, clean outline. Appealing head with soft expression. Longer from hock to heel than 1. Moved soundly.

3. Mc Neil and Boyd-McNeil’s Gwendariff Gonna Go For Gold

Novice (5 0)

1. Hogarth’s Twoacres Bubbling Spring at Halingswood

2. Muir and O’Connor’s Gwendariff I’m Comin Out

3. Randle’s Forfarian’s Hidden Secret with Rionore

Graduate (9,1)

1. Sharman and Jenning’s Kerrimere Indiscreet. A very well-balanced elegant boy, soundly constructed throughout with no exaggerations. Very well presented, clean outline, well-angulated in front and behind with nice flat croup, good bone and tailset. Lovely masculine head, refined over skull, dark eye and melting expression. Moved soundly with drive.

2. Gratton’s Bardonhill Snow Wolf with Glenlaine. Close up to 1. Stylish boy, well- constructed and well-presented. Good bone, good reach of neck, clean over neck and shoulders, nice sloping topline, well angulated hind quarters. Classic head, refined over skull, raised brows and soft expression. Moved soundly.

3. Lucas’s Harreds Hassle with Amberlight

Postgraduate (12, 4)

1. Bott’s Gwendariff D’ya Know My Name by Bardonhill. A stunning dark coated dog beautifully presented; he looked a picture standing and didn’t disappoint on handling or on the move. He is well constructed, has nicely arched neck, good spring of rib, strong in the loin. Plenty of fore-chest, good bone, clean over neck and shoulders, strong well-angulated hindquarters, short from hock to heel. Masculine head, refined over skull, low set ears and a delightful soft expression with a hint of mischief. Moved soundly with style and not a little exuberance. Presented in excellent coat and condition. He has true star quality. DCC, BOB and Gundog Group 2.

2. Lucas’s Bardonhill Eternal Flame by Amberlight. An elegant boy with a super outline. Clean over neck and shoulders, straight front, good reach of neck, gently sloping topline, flowing through flat croup to well-set tail. Soundly constructed with good depth of chest and correct angulation at the shoulder and good bend of stifle with hocks well let down. Not as strong in the loin as 1. Moved soundly.

3. Bell and Barker Bell’s Balintyne Just for You

Limit (17,4). Strongest class of the day with a number of dogs I really liked missing out on a card.

1. Mitchell’s Amblin’s Sweet William. A classy eye-catching dog, full of quality, presented in gleaming dark coat and condition. Super outline, with good reach of neck set into well-laid back shoulders, gently sloping topline. Very well constructed with good bone, straight front, good forechest and depth of body, well-ribbed back and neat feet. Typical Irish head with plenty of work, dark eye and soft expression. Moved true with drive and reach. A serious contender in the challenge, just lacking a little in finish and maturity but his time will come I am sure.

2. Longbottom and Stewart-Ritchie’s Gwendariff Unknown Soldier JW. Another quality, typy dog with a super outline and presented in excellent coat and condition. Elegant and racy with good reach of neck, well-laid shoulders, firm, sloping topline, flat croup and correct tailset. Well-angulated rear quarters with good bend of stifle. Beautiful head with dark eye, low set ears and soft quizzical expression. Moved well but not so accurate as 1 today.

3. Wilkins Margretwoods Gobstopper

Open (8,1) An outstanding class – a pleasure to judge dogs of the highest quality.

1. Crocker and Siddle’s Sh Ch Copper’s War of Roses. A dog I have admired from the ringside and he did not disappoint today. He has an exquisite head and expression, long, lean, refined, low set ears. Outstanding racy outline, clean over neck and shoulders which flow down gently sloping topline to well-set tail. Excellent depth of chest, strong in the loin, well-angulated quarters with good bend of stifle and short from hock to heel. Moved soundly with good length of stride. DRCC. Splitting hairs in the challenge but on the day, I just thought that the young postgraduate winner had the extra sparkle.

2. Sturrock’s Sh Ch Forfarian I’m Sexy An I Know It JW, I really liked this dog. He has similar outstanding qualities to 1. A striking outline, excellent conformation and substance without any hint of coarseness. Lovely refined head, plenty of work and kind quizzical expression. Straight front, well ribbed back, strong in the loin and in the rear quarters. Not quite the rear angulation of 1 but moved true and covered the ground with ease.

3. McLarnon’s Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Nuts Aboutu Glenavna JW

Bitches

Veteran (2,1)

1. Hyslop’s Gwendariff Whata Showgirl. An elegant feminine girl with a pretty head set on nicely arched neck flowing into well-laid shoulders and a firm topline. Well constructed, straight front, good depth of body and just enough bend of stifle. No exaggerations, presented in very good condition. Moved soundly with drive, looking very youthful for her 8 3/4 years.

Minor Puppy (4,1)

1. Naylor and Morrison’s Anlory Doris. A lovely 6 month old baby built on racy lines with a very pretty head, dark coat and classic clean elegant outline. She is so well constructed with good rib and depth of chest, straight front, neat feet, good sweep of stifle with correct croup and tailset.. She stood out for movement – every foot hit the right spot as she covered the ground with ease – amazingly collected for one so young. BPB and Best Puppy

2. Antony and Stuart’s Staratlanta Je T’adore Paris. A very promising baby of elegant type. Pretty, long lean head with dark eye and sweet expression. Clean over neck and shoulders, gently sloping topline, good depth of chest. Quarters not as developed as 1 at this stage.

3. Borthwick’s Lotushill Katsura

Puppy (8, 2)

1. Hall’s Glennara Cilleigne Dervla (lkc) NAF. Scored in this nice class with her overall balance and rich, dark coat. Lovely refined head with dark eye, nicely chiselled, raised brows and sweet expression. Well- constructed, with straight front, good forechest and depth of body, strong in the loin. Quarters need more time to develop. Moved soundly.

2. Henderson’s Sametsuz On Reflection (ai). Elegant, well- constructed, racy young lady-refined throughout. Taller than 1 but well-balanced with lean head and soft but mischievous expression, set on long, slightly arched neck, flowing cleanly onto well laid back shoulders. Good depth of chest and rib. Like 1 quarters need more time for development. A bit of a fidget, giving her handler a hard time, but moved soundly when settled.

3. Mc Neil and Boyd-Mc Neil’s Glennlokhen Deveron

Junior (11,2) A lovely class.

1. McDonald’s Delsanto Miss Freya. I loved this young lady; she is full of quality and promise. So balanced, no exaggerations. The prettiest of heads, nicely chiselled with a melting expression, low set ears. Nicely arched neck sitting cleanly into shoulders, straight front, neat feet. Good forechest, well-ribbed back. Strong quarters with good bend of stifle. Firm topline which she kept on the move.

2. Bell and Barker-Bell’s Balintyne Freda Payne. A nicely proportioned, promising racy, elegant girl with a long, lean head and kind expression. Topline, not as firm as 1, but pleasing outline, good forechest, clean over neck and shoulders. Well-angulated front and rear. Moved with ease of action, covering the ground well with lashing tail action – so nice to see.

3. Wilkins’ Margretswood Pooh Bear

Yearling (17, 3)

1. Crocker and Siddle’s Riverbrue Gloriana. A beautiful elegant young bitch, shown in excellent coat and condition. I loved her style and proportions. Compact and balanced throughout with a super topline. The sweetest of heads, refined over skull, melting expression. Long well-muscled neck set cleanly into well-angulated shoulders. Excellent body properties, strong quarters, good bend of stifle, short from hock to heel. She moved covered the ground with ease and great style. A strong contender in the challenge. She has a great future.

2. Dank-Kemish’s Rapatty Star Light Over Alolfrana JW. Different type to 1 but full of quality. A mature girl with a pretty coat, built on elegant lines with feminine, balanced head. Excelled in neck and shoulders, straight front, good bone and depth of chest, strong in loin. I would prefer more bend of stifle but she won her place in a strong class by her excellent driving movement and lashing tail action – a delight to see.

3. Mugford’s Lynwood Isn’t She Lovely JW

Novice (5, 0)

1. Hall’s Glennara Cilleigne Dervla (lkc) NAF

2. Hinslea’s Gwendariff Guess Who’s Comin to Northamber. 4th place in a very strong Junior class. A promising elegant youngster with a balanced pretty head, raised brow and soft expression. Clean over neck and shoulders, good bone, ample spring of rib. Strong quarters. Not quite as balanced as 1 at the moment but she has plenty of time on her side.

3. Howatson’s Heathclare Fancy Time At Vanders

Graduate (11, 3)

1. Nevitt’s Aoibheanne’s Stay With Me. Beautifully balanced, elegant young lady who stood out in this very nice class. Classic, feminine head with dark eye, low set ears. Good length of neck set into well-angulated shoulders. Deep chest, firm topline, strong quarters with good bend of stifle and low set hocks. Moved soundly.

2. Longbottom’s Gwendariff We’ll Rememberu JW. Pretty, elegant bitch built on racy lines with a lovely outline. Clean over neck and shoulders, straight front, firm sloping topline, correct croup and tailset. Well angulated quarters with good bend of stifle. Not quite the body properties of 1 but a lovely typy bitch. Moved well.

3. Hyslop’s Gwendariff On A Rollercoaster

Postgraduate (9, 2).

1. Mugford’s Sangarah Skyline Over Lynwood (Imp Hun) JW. What a beautiful bitch – she is has all the essentials. Presented in hard condition. Perfectly proportioned throughout, elegant with no exaggerations. Clean flowing outline. Excellent body properties, correct bone, straight front, neat tight feet. Super angulation at the shoulder, well angulated quarters with correct bend of stifle. The sweetest of heads with true Irish expression. She excelled on the move, showing her style as she covered the ground with real drive and reach. I was pleased to award her BCC.

2. Blackshaw’s Lanstara Spring Star JW. A quality bitch – unlucky to meet 1 today. She is well constructed and balanced throughout with an eye-catching outline. Good shoulder, ample spring of rib, strong, powerful quarters with hocks well let down. Balanced head, low set ears, kind eye with hint of naughtiness. Covered the ground well on the move, using her tail to advantage.

3. Naylor and Morrison’s Anlory Corbieres JW

Limit (16,3) Very strong class.

1. Stevenson’s Lochlorien Scully Foxes Andley. This bitch caught my eye – for her balance, rich dark coat and elegant outline. Excellent conformation with good bone and substance, well presented in hard condition. Long lean head with soft expression. Well angulated at the shoulder and at the rear, straight front, good width over the croup with correct tailset. Moved soundly.

Good arched neck set cleanly into well-laid back shoulders. Well ribbed back, good width across quarters. Preferred the croup of 1 but moved soundly with drive.

3. Gisby’s Suteresett Once Upon A Dream

Open (4,2)

1. Sturrock’s Sh Ch. Forfarian Hey Sexy Lady JW. Lovely elegant bitch, full of quality from head to tail and making a super picture. She has a beautiful classic Irish head, refined over skull with raised brows, low set ears and melting expression. Very well constructed, well sprung ribs, good depth of chest, straight in front. Nicely angulated fore and aft with good croup and tailset. Super dark coat. Moved sound and true with drive. RBCC

2. Gardner’s Sh Ch Thendara Jocasta JW. Another top quality bitch, built on heavier lines than 1. Beautifully balanced, clean outline with all the essentials. Lean, well-balanced head, with soft expression, strong neck set into well-laid shoulders, good angulation in front and rear with strong quarters. Not as positive on the move as 1 today,
